When I came home at lunch time Rodders was asleep and didn't make a sound until I was almost at his crate. He started squeaking as soon as he knew I was there and I let him out for a quick fuss before letting him out in to the garden. He stood on the patio looking back at me as if to say I'm not sure if you are going to abandon me so I went out with him. He had a quick piddle and was then happy to follow me back in.
I asked if he was a hungry boy and he barked before running towards the kitchen. He sat watching me as I weighed out his lunch and put it in the bowls and he sat until I had put it down for him. While he was eating I made a cuppa and filled his water bowls. He didn't eat all his kibble this time.
Once he had eaten he was happy to play so I got his ball thrower and we went back in to the garden. He loves chasing the ball but doesn't really get the hang of bringing it back. Although the weather was now dry and bright it was freezing so I left him out there happily playing with the ball for a little while.
Once he had got bored with playing with the ball I nipped out and got it and he came back in with me. All too soon is was time for me to go back to work. As his tummy seems to be OK I gave him some of his left over kibble as a treat as I popped him back in his crate.
As part of my job I have to go to the local bank which is about a 5 minute walk away. I looked at my watch at 3pm and thought shall I go now? I should have done as less than 20 minutes later it had gone pitch black outside and it was throwing out down with rain. Luckily it was only a short, sharp shower and by 4pm it had brightened up again so I dashed out then. The temperature had dropped and it was a bit breezy but I got some fresh air and it helps to break up the afternoon.
I left work at 5pm and was home by five past. Rodders seemed to be asleep again! I do hope he has been OK and hasn't barked the house down. He was happy to come out the crate and have a fuss and also went in to the garden on his own for a piddle.
He has been so funny this evening. He has been in and out of the garden playing with the stones and running between the grass, leaping over the edge of the patio, dashing under the table, around a leg and back again. He has also managed to get the duck to quack and had a great time growling at it and he has been playing with his ball and frizzbee.
I also found time to pop him on the grooming table and come him through. He escaped from the noose that is supposed to help keep him still but it wasn't a problem as he still stood there (most of the time) and let me carry on. He even let me sort out his gunky eyes without complaint. When he did try to sit down I put my arm under his back legs and held him up. The only bit he doesn't seem keen on is when I try to get him to stand on his back legs so that I can do his tummy.
OH is on his way and dinner is already underway, good job as I am starving!
Just got Rodders, a miniature schnauzer puppy and wanted to document our journey together. Never had a puppy or a blog before so this could be interesting!

A lazy morning
Rodders spent a lot of the morning asleep or running after me as I got washed and dressed and pottered about the house sorting out yet more washing.
While I had a late breakfast he was out playing in the garden and on the patio with the stones.
By late morning I was exhausted and he was happy to come up on the sofa with me where we both fell asleep until lunch time.
He seemed hungry and barked for his lunch. I gave him 50/50 id diet and kibble again, his tummy seems to be OK and he seems to have tolerated it OK. Well, at least he didn't throw it up straight away!

A fun evening with Rodders
Rodders snoozed for two hours and woke up full of mischief. He was happy playing with his toys until it was time for his tea. I got him to sit and wait until the bowl were a millimetre from the floor so some progress.
For the first time since the Christmas Tree went up he seems to be fascinated by it and now disappears off behind it with any treasure and has tried to eat some of the lower decorations. He does stop chewing the minute he is told no though.
He is still barking an awful lot and usually runs straight to the back door. It is difficult to know if he needs to go out in to the garden or not, half the time when I open the door he just sits there and looks out. If he does go out he spends most of his time standing on the patio barking. A couple of times I have made him come back in and another couple I have just gone out there and lifted him up to bring him in, this has backfired as he now runs off when he see's me coming so it is back to calling him in. Sometimes he comes and sometimes he doesn't so I shut the door which usually has him running.
I also found him eating a christmas card which I presume had fallen from the windowsill.
This all sounds like he has been a monkey all evening but he hasn't really. He seemed to play or get up to mischief for a couple of hours and then sleep for a couple of hours. He is so much fun to have around and I love the fact that he can play happily on his own with his toys or in the garden or with you throwing a ball or toy for him. He also talks by barking or squeaking to let you know what he wants (usually up on the sofa) and it can be fun to try and interpret what he wants.
Tonight I was a bad Mummy and it took me a while to work out what he was saying and I was mortified when I realised that he was trying to tell me his water bowl was completely empty. I quickly filled it and he had a small drink, thank goodness he wasn't really thirsty.
He is still putting some of his toys away by himself but can get over excited and take them all out and throw them about the place. When he does that I start to pick them up and drop them in ether for him, he talks to me as I do it and all of a sudden one toy will hardly hit the toy box before he leaps in and grabs it back.

Quite a busy day
After I showered and dressed OH called in to see us for an hour. As he arrived I was putting on some washing and Rodders was playing in the conservatory. He didn't hear the back door until almost the last moment but was thrilled to see who it was and wanted straight up for a snuggle. We all ended up having a group hug as I think it was the only way I was going to get to say hello too!
OH and I had a cuppa and a bit of breakfast and then he had a play with Rodders while I brought the bin back in. OH and I then popped upstairs to fit my new cool pad to my bed in the hope that it helps me to sleep better. Finally we all had a snuggle on the sofa before it was time for OH to go. As OH and I had a hug goodbye Rodders was making some strange noises, I think he is getting a bit jealous.
As normal Rodders trotted out to the gate with OH but when I called him back he got halfway and stopped for a piddle. OH managed to get out the gate safely which is the main thing. Rodders stayed out there for a little while sniffing about and squeaking a bit. I don't think he had heard OH's car go as he parked somewhere different today.
I emptied & reloaded the washing machine and Rodders chased his toys about.
Once my hair was dry I put on my dog walking gear and got one of my new hat and glove sets ready so that we could head to Gadebridge Park. Rodders was very excited to be going out and was jumping up. I managed to get him to sit and wait at the door and walked him to the car.
Once parked I got him out the car and put his lead back on. As we were walking to the edge of the park two ladies with three dogs were coming off. Their dogs started barking and so Rodders joined in, they seemed to be giving us a wide berth so I didn't let Rodders say hello to them.
As we got to the park I made him sit and swapped to the extendable lead so that he could have more freedom. He was very happy running about and he got to meet many dogs that were off the lead. Rodders wanted to run off and play with some of them and wasn't happy to be on his lead. Luckily some of them were happy to play with him and he got to run about with a Golden Retriever and a Chocolate Lab amongst others.
Rodders was very good at coming when called and he was happy to just sit and watch what was going on about him several times. We walked our way around the whole park and the only time he was a little nervous was when some children came past us on bikes and scooters. He wasn't bothered by a young lad in a wheelchair, even when he asked if he was Toto from the wizard of Oz. Rodders had a good look at the River Gade and looked as though he might try to go in there at one point but he saw another dog which distracted him. As we got back to where we started he sat while I swapped leads again so that we could walk to the car.
As we were about to get in the car he spotted a Staffie pup and wanted to play. It looked like a smaller version of Molly from Puppy Party and was called Fletcher. They started off sniffing each other but it was obvious that Fletcher wanted to play. When Fletcher got a bit rough Rodders put him in his place by barking at him, when Fletcher tried again Rodders let him play for a little while and then growled at him. The couple with him were not very happy about it but I explained that they were just playing and working out where the boundaries are and both dogs had their tales up. After a little while we parted company and I put Rodders back in his car crate.
Once we were back home I gave Rodders his lunch and after a bit of a play and a trip to the garden he was happy to have a snooze.
He woke up with the devil in him and, as well as playing with his toys, he was up to all sorts of mischief. The door stop kept being dragged across the floor and then he started to take the washing off the radiator. He was found chewing the door mat at the back door when I thought he was playing quietly with his bone.
He was in and out of the garden and it was nice to hear him playing with the stones on the patio again. I don't think he has done this properly for almost two weeks.
He is barking a lot today and it is sometimes difficult to work out why. I really hope my neighbours can't hear him or don't mind too much.

Back to the vets
OH was up with Rodders at 6am and I came down at 6.30am. Rodders hadn't had his breakfast yet so I sorted that out and then made OH some toast.
Rodders went upstairs with OH when he went for a shower and then came down with the bath mat to go in the washing machine, well he got it to the bottom of the stairs but needed help to get it any further. This is the third load of washing in 12 hours as we have done his towels and fleeces so they are clean for going away.
Once OH was ready for work we had a cuddle and said goodbye, for once Rodders seemed to be jealous and was barking at us. OH gave him a fuss too. Rodders went out to the gate with OH and came back to the patio when I called him. The little monkey then thought better of it and was heading back to the gate, luckily OH spotted him and shut the gate very quickly.
Rodders and I had a snuggle before we went upstairs so that I could get washed and dressed as we needed to head off to the vet for Rodders check up.
I am so lucky that Rodders likes going to the vets and he trots in there quite happily, barking as he goes so that everyone knows that he is there. He was very happy to see that Nicci was there but not so happy that she didn't give him any liver treats. We sat in the waiting room for a little while and then Roger called us in.
We talked through how Rodders has been over the last few days and the fact that he seems to be starving. Roger admitted that we have given him the absolute minimum to eat so he wasn't surprised by this. We weighed Rodders and he is back to 4.6k so he has lost weight over the last few days and is back where he was when we weighed him last week. Roger checked him over and seems happy with him but, because it is Christmas and we are going away, he wants to keep him on the i.d. diet until next Wednesday before re-introducing kibble slowly (75/25% on Wednesday, 50/50 Thursday and 25/75 on Friday) but if there are any signs that it is upsetting him we need to go straight back to the i.d. diet. We can also increase him to 75g per meal. And no treats at all for at least 2 weeks but, once he is back on kibble, I can use some of this to use as treats. I also need to call on Thursday to let them know how he is doing.
I mentioned his choke chain and Roger says that he would have been able to cut it off if necessary but he is obviously a growing boy and we need to get a bigger one. It iOS difficult to say how much bigger his head will get.
We left the consulting room and Rodders got lots of fuss from the girls while I was paying the bill and collecting his food. I also picked up a different slicker brush that looks like it will be gentler on him. Once we were back in the car we called OH to let him know how we got on.

A better day
OH got up with Rodders this morning so I got a bit of a lie in. He sent Rodders up to wake me just before 6.30am and I came down for my cuppa and to give Rodders his breakfast. I then threw on my dog walking clothes just before OH left for work. Rodders didn't go out to the gate to say goodbye to OH this morning, he stood and watched from the patio until he heard the car go.
It is wet and miserable this morning so our walk was mainly on the roads on the estate with a short time on the very muddy and soggy rugby field.
I then had to wash and change for work. Rodders is such a good puppy but he doesn't understand why I am not giving him any treats and so he wouldn't walk in to his crate as normal and I had to lift him in. He still didn't make a sound.
At lunchtime I managed to get home, give Rodders a fuss, get him outside in the garden for a piddle, give him his lunch, make a cuppa and some toast for me, poop scoop the garden, give OH an update, play fetch with Rodders and put him back in his crate to be back at work in 45 minutes!
Tonight when I got home Rodders was more like his usual self and started to bark when he saw me. After a very quick fuss he wanted in to the garden for a long piddle and then went in to the kitchen to bark for his tea! After he had eaten and we had played for a little I went up to change and Rodders was running off with slippers and stealing socks from the laundry. OH called on his way to his hotel for the night and was pleased to hear that Rodders is feeling better and getting in to mischief.
I ate my tea while Rodders played on his own with his toys and then tried to keep him occupied as he kept going in to the kitchen and barking for food. When toys didn't seem to be working and he didn't want to be up on my knee or in the garden I put on my coat and his lead and we went out for a tramp around the streets for a little while.
I gave Rodders his supper at 8.30pm and after a trip to the garden he was happy to settle down next to me on the sofa. He wasn't too fussed when OH face timed us to say goodnight, after a quick listen and a glance he settled back down to sleep! It won't be too long before we go to bed.

Oh dear!
Rodders played in the garden for ages this afternoon and I stood in the conservatory watching him for a while. He was having a high old time chasing the stones he has taken from the end of the patio and running about playing under the tree. He has also realised that there are stones at the other end of the patio.
At one point he was stood barking at the glider seat on the patio so I had to go an find out why, he had managed to get one of his stones stuck under there. I retrieved that and put it and all other stones from the grass and patio back much to his disgust.
We also played fetch with his ball and he kept bringing it back and putting it under one of the chairs and barking for me to get it out so that he could jump all over me.
And then I got a thumping headache and lay down on the sofa :-( Rodders wanted to come up and the two of us slept there for over an hour. I feel much better now though, good job as Rodders is now feeling playful.
Rodders can now reach things on the dining chairs and got my slippers down all by himself. Soon nothing will be out of his reach!

A more active morning
I let Rodders sleep for about an hour and then made him come upstairs with me while I got washed and dressed. He settled on the bathmat while I washed and the bed as I got dressed. We said our usual good morning to Pentland before coming downstairs.
Rodders was happy to play in the conservatory for a little while and then wanted in to the garden for a piddle and a run about. Once back inside he wanted to play so we have played fetch with the ball and a bit of tug. After another play on his own he has gone back out in to the garden and is digging in the stones at the end of the patio.

Oh what joy
Rodders was playing in the garden just before OH arrived home so when I saw the car at the back I opened the patio door. He could hear something and started to bark and ran towards the gate.
As soon as OH spoke the barking changed to squeaks of joy and Rodders could hardly wait for him to come through there gate. He was dancing around his feet as they came up the path and in to the house and couldn't what to get up for a snuggle.
OH had been working for a friend today and their black lab puppy Cookie was there, Rodders didn't even seem to notice the smell or wasn't bothered by it.
OH and Rodders then went upstairs to get slippers and use the bathroom and then came down for a play while I sorted out dinner. OH tells me that Rodders is getting very good at stopping play when he gets too excited or rough and calms down quite quickly but Rodders wasn't really ready to stop playing when dinner was ready and kept jumping up OH at the dinner table, bad boy. He did eventually settle on his snuggle fleece.
Once we had eaten and I had cleared away I left Rodders with OH while I loaded the car up ready to go to the tip. It is so much quicker to do it on my own. Rodders didn't seem bothered by me putting on my coat and going out the kitchen door without him, I am so pleased that he is happy to be with OH.
After looking at some eBay items on OH's lappie and searching on mine I think another trip to Pets at Home is on order to buy a bin to keep Rodders kibble in. It will be far easier to keep it in there and the Curver ones at Pets at Home seem far better than anything else I can find.

A very sleepy puppy
We said goodbye to OH at 7am and Rodders went straight in to the garden for a piddle and a poo (still a bit loose) and came back inside almost straight away.
He didn't need any encouragement to settle down on his new bed pad at my feet and there he stayed until 10.45. He then asked to come up on my knee and he went straight to sleep for another 30 minutes. I eventually gave up and woke him as we need to get moving.
He was most unimpressed as I opened the door and put him in the garden and decided to stand there and bark at the guy two doors down who was out working in his garden. Little horror didn't move off the patio at all so I gave up and called him in so that I could go and have a shower. I took a Kong stuffed with kibble with me but he really wasn't interested, he hasn't really eaten since 6pm last night.
Once back downstairs he went to play with his toys in the conservatory and then asked to go in the garden for a piddle and a play. He was out there for about 15 minutes and has come back in much more lively.
Time to dry my hair and get dressed properly, then we can go for a walk.
Playing in the garden
Rodders wasn't sure what to make of the wind as it was lifting the cover off the patio table. A couple of times he asked to go out and, once the door was open, just stood there looking. It was flipping freezing and a battle to keep the door held open while he made his mind up.
He has been in and out of the garden all morning though, he seems to be spending quite a lot of time on the patio near the gate and I can almost see him through the tree now that the wind has made the leaves drop.
When he hasn't been outside he has been playing with his toys and yoghurt pot and there has been no chewing or biting which is fantastic!
I was in the kitchen for a while sorting out a casserole for the slow cooker. He came through to collect a carrot top which got taken to the rolled up carpet and last about 5 minutes! He happily trotted back through for another.

Barking in the garden
Rodders asked to go out in the garden after he finished eating, he hadn't been out long when he started to bark.
I can usually tell what his bark means but this was a strange one and I went to investigate. There are some old plastic sack out on the back patio that used to contain stones for the other patio and they have blown about in the wind.
I let myself out to go and move them and he came running towards me barking as I crossed the patio. I am not sure who was more surprised as I tripped over on the stones that he has left lying about, luckily I didn't actually fall. Note to self, look where you are going.
Anyway, I rescued the sacks and moved some other things to stop them blowing about.
Rodders came back in with me but didn't stay in long. The wind does seem to make him a bit hyper though!

Cold and windy
It really is quite cold outside and the wind is now much worse than it was earlier.
Rodders asked to go out to play, walked across the patio and decided he didn't like it and came straight back in. Could be an interesting evening if he won't go out!
He has had a long nap today (part of it curled up on the sofa with me) but is now playing. I gave him a rawhide bone to see what he would do with it and he has thrown it about, chewed it a bit and then abandoned it in favour of his normal toys.
He has asked to go back in the garden and he had a piddle before starting to play. It seems he isn't that bothered by the wind now he has had a think about it.
The leaves are starting to come off the tree in the garden, hardly surprising in this wind. It is a small tree, just over 6 feet tall, and the branches reach all the way down to the ground. In the spring it has little bottle brush type things on it. No idea what it is but it makes it difficult for me to see what Rodders is up to on the back patio but it is now becoming easier.
He has come back in and is a bit over excited, jumping up and trying to bite so the lead has had to go on. He has gone back to the rawhide bone and is throwing it around the laminate floor. He does seem to like things that make a noise as he is also playing with a yoghurt pot.

OH working on the house
OH is busy putting an outside light up for Rodders so that he can see (and be seen) in the garden in the dark. It is one of those clever ones that comes on by itself if something moves within a certain area. This also involves rewiring the passage lights as we needed to move the switch.
Although Rodders adores OH he has been quite happy to have a look at what he is doing and then leave him to it.
OH needed more bits from the DIY store and so I was despatched to get them. I put Rodders in his bed with some treats but did not shut the crate. I was gone for about half an hour, the radio was on and OH was pottering about in the passage but Rodders didn't seem to realise until 5 minutes before I got back that he could get out by himself. He was very happy to be able to greet me at the lounge door though.
The rest of the time he has kept well out of OH's way and has slept on his snuggle fleece or played with his toys in the conservatory. I had visions of him trying to climb the ladder and under his feet all day so I am pleasantly surprised.
Rodders has asked to go out in the garden for a piddle and a play and OH tried to get him to come back in through the back door rather than the patio door where he usually comes in. Rodders didn't understand that at all so I let him in the usual way.

An afternoon in the garden
Rodders has spent a lot of time in the garden this afternoon and I have been out to join him a couple of times to poop scoop and to collect up the stones and put them back where they belong at the end of the patio. He was barking quite a lot as people were out in their gardens or behind us in the garages, I hope it doesn't get too much for the neighbours!
Rodders ate most of his lunch and then, when we went upstairs to the bathroom, he ate the rest of his breakfast (or was that last nights supper!) so I am not sure if he will eat his supper tonight especially as he also got three extra treats while I was filling up the treat pot from the cupboard.
Rodders decided that he was staying upstairs so I left him there for a little while and then enticed him down with one of his toys. I do need to check the back bedroom just in case he was up to any mischief in there while he was up there on his own.
He has also played with his toys and was running up and down the full length of the house while I was trying to do some figure work for OH. Rodders then decided it was time for a snooze and went and stood with his front legs on the sofa barking at me. I took the hint and came and sat down on the sofa. Once he was asleep I transferred him and snuggle fleece to the floor where he is now.
OH has called to say he is on his way home so I need to go and start dinner shortly.

Where has the puppy gone
Rodders asked to go in to the garden but he seemed to have been gone for ages so I went to the patio and called him. He came trotting out from behind the tree looking very pleased with himself. As he came in the door I spotted that he had something in his mouth. It was the plastic strapping from around the planks of wood up by the back fence.
I will need to check up there in daylight to see if he has done any damage.
I let him chew it for a short time but took it away as soon as he left it alone.

A quiet morning
OH got ready for work and Rodders and I saw him off at the patio door. Once he had shut the gate I let Rodders out and he stood on the patio listening until OH drove away before going for a sniff about.
He came back in for a bit of a play but he was still quite dopey and soon wanted up on the sofa. I settled him on my knee and then moved him and snuggle fleece to the floor where he slept for over an hour.
Once he woke up he was happy to play in the conservatory for a while before asking to go in to the garden. He was out there for ages playing and gave a couple of barks but was generally quiet until he heard Bob next door, he deserves lots of barks apparently and it was almost as though they were having a conversation over the fence.
Rodders came back in and, because I had left the lounge door open, it wasn't long before he took himself upstairs. I grabbed his Kong and filled it with the rest of his kibble, OH had given him his breakfast but he hadn't eaten much, and followed him upstairs. He was very happy to chase his Kong around the bathroom floor and emptied it in record time so he must have been hungry. I washed and cleaned my teeth and then watched him playing.
We moved in to the bedroom and after a sniff about I let him up on the bed so that I could get dressed in relative peace.

Rodders loves the garden
Rodders has been playing out in the garden most of the morning, he loves it out there. He spends his time playing with the stones on the patio, sniffing about the borders for an elusive strawberry (he found a very green one today) and letting me know the coming and goings of our neighbours by barking.
He can get very wet out there but he is happy to chase about for ages.

Back home
Rodders had a bit of a play and then wanted out in to the garden so he could play with the stones on the patio.
Once he came back in he sat on snuggle fleece at my feet for a rest and was giving the odd bark, not sure what at.
He then got up for a play in the conservatory with his toys and the cheeky thing barked when he wanted a fuss.
Think I might make a cuppa and then go and watch some tv.
