At bedtime I had to wake Rodders up and carry him outside for a piddle. He wasn't happy to be out there and he stood for ages before having a stretch and then trying to go back in the house. I lifted him back on to the grass and he just sat down. We must have been out of there for about 15 minutes before he wandered off and had a piddle.
Back inside he didn't want to go in to his crate and was trying to climb on to my knee. I gave up asking him to get in to the crate and lifted his front feet in, the rest of him followed and he curled up and settled down for the night. As I climbed the stairs to bed there was silence for the first time in three nights.
Just after 5am I could hear Rodders squeaking and making a noise, I rolled over and hoped that he would settle, he certainly quietened down after about 10 minutes. This was a huge mistake on my part and I know that I mustn't do it again. At 5.30am he started up again and was barking quite loudly so I gave up and came downstairs. As soon as I walked in to the lounge I knew we had a problem by the smell. Rodders had pooped in his bed, luckily his tummy seems better and it was easy to clear up.
I gave him a quick fuss before he went out in to the garden leaving me to clear up and put his mattress topper in the wash. He came back in and was squeaking for his breakfast so I sorted that out. I wasn't awake enough to make him sit and wait while I put his bowls down. I then washed my hands before making myself a cuppa.
Rodders seemed to eat his breakfast at record speed and then went off to play in the conservatory. He gave one squeak and I got up to let him in the garden to find that he was just throwing up on the door mat. I put him straight in the garden and started to clear up again. It is obvious that this is just his breakfast as it is almost one solid lump and you can see undigested kibble in it (sorry of that is too much information for some!) but at least it is easy to clear up. And we now have the second load of washing ready for the washing machine already.
Just got Rodders, a miniature schnauzer puppy and wanted to document our journey together. Never had a puppy or a blog before so this could be interesting!

Have I mentioned?
Rodders seems to love his toy box, he even out his own toys away! He also loves to sit, lie or stand in it while selecting his next toy!
He is also a little star when it comes to tablets. He eats them straight out of my hand like treats, so much easier than trying to force him to swallow them after I have thrown them down the back of his throat! As he is so good he gets a cube of cheese to follow.
He has always loved our slippers, doesn't matter if they are mine or OH's, he is quite happy to walk around with one in his mouth and will confidently come down stairs with it (and up occasionally!). Tonight OH called me to come quick, and there was Rodders half way down the stairs with both of OH's slippers in his mouth at the same time. By the time I had grabbed the camera he had made it to the conservatory with them.

We now have a little horror!
Rodders was having a quiet snooze on the sofa with me and then we got two interruptions. The first one was a christmas card being delivered and Sophie knocked incase Roders ate post, the second was Kevin and Polo coming to visit us.
Polo and Rodders have met before and they seemed to get on OK again today. Except someone piddled on the floor, not sure who :-( It was quite a big puddle and I am not convinced it was Rodders. I made Kev and I a cuppa and we sat nattering while Rodders chased Polo about and asking him to play. When Polo got fed up with being batted with a paw and teased by him I put his Rodders lead on and tried to make him sit. He threw a complete tantrum and was trying to bite me so he got severely checked. I then managed to get him to lie down and stood on the lead so he couldn't get up. He lay at my feet making play with me noises but at least he stayed down.
Once they left Rodders had the devil in him. He was running around getting in to mischief as I was trying to tidy up all the wrapping paper stuff and then I found him sitting in his toy box. At least that was keeping him quiet! He then decided to throw all his toys out of the toy box and the conservatory floor was covered, this is one spoilt puppy! I hope he doesn't get too many more for Christmas or we will be looking for a new, bigger, toy box.
As I cooked dinner he was under my feet in the kitchen waiting to see if anything dropped. He then asked for his dinner, the first time in ages, so he must be feeling better. He has eaten most of it too.
There are now fireworks going off and so he is barking at them. I think I have just managed to distract him as he has gone back to his toys.

Shopping, wrapping, playing
While Rodders was being dopey I took the opportunity to go and finish my Christmas shopping and to post a parcel. He was happy to go in his crate once he knew that treats were on offer and he was quiet when I left.
He was on his own for over two hours and was still quiet when I got back, he didn't make a noise until he could actually see me as I came in and put the shopping down first. He then started squeaking and I let him out of his crate for a fuss and we went straight in to the garden so he could have a piddle.
We both had some lunch and then he started to play as I was wrapping presents. Every now and again I would stop and give him a fuss or throw one of his toys for him to fetch and he seemed quite happy with that. When I had a break earlier he was sat on my lap and the show jumping from Olympia was on the TV. Rodders was so funny, he was making a funny barking noise as he watched them like he wanted to play! He then turned around to face me and was climbing up me, I have no idea where he was trying to go or what he wanted to do but it was very sweet. When I went back to wrapping he was happy playing in the conservatory or out in the garden.
After wrapping another three people's presents I stopped for a while to watch a bit of TV and Rodders fell asleep on my lap before being transferred to his bed pad at my feet.

Rain and supper
While I was cooking my dinner the rain started to fall really heavily. To start with Rodders just barked at the noise on the conservatory roof but he then decided to go out in it. I delayed serving up as I knew that he was going to come in soaked and would need to be dried off, luckily he didn't stay out long.
OH has said several times that there is nothing wrong with Rodders hearing and today proves it. As I was pottering about doing things I was opening the lounge door to put things on the stairs to be taken up later or to go to the bin at the front door. Where ever Rodders was he came running incase I was going to go out without him.
After I had eaten I gave him his supper and he cleared the bowl! This is the first time I have been able to do the recommended thing and feed him after me. Usually he would be fast asleep from 7pm but he is now staying awake longer.
After supper he kept barking to go out but when I opened the door he changed his mind. The third time he actually went and came back in very wet so he was towelled off again.
After quite a long play with his toys and yoghurt pot and a game of fetch with his ball he asked to come up on my knee and once he settled down I moved him to the bed pad at my feet.

OH pops in
OH popped in for a cuppa and a quick snuggle with Rodders to break up his journey home.
Rodders was fast asleep on his bed pad and didn't hear anything until OH was almost in the door. He ran off towards the conservatory barking but stopped and started squeaking as soon as he realised who it was. He adores OH and was jumping up to be lifted for a snuggle. OH obliged and Rodders was soon giving him a quick wash and snuggling in to his beard.
I made a cuppa and we all went through to the conservatory where Rodders was happy to be up on OH's chest for a while. He then wanted down for a little while before coming to sit on me.
OH went up to use the bathroom and Rodders couldn't wait to get off my knee and run after him. When they came back down it was time for OH to go. Rodders was rooting around the back of the rolled up carpet so OH went to check why. One half chewed carrot top! He made Rodders sit and wait before he gave it him back.
As Rodders had the carrot he didn't seem too bothered that OH disappeared out the door. Five minutes later when he realised he wasn't coming back he asked to go out and went straight to the gate to check before coming back to the grass for a piddle and back in the house.
He has had a mad few minutes running up and down playing and has given Teddy a seeing too but has now come to sit on his bed pad.

A lazy afternoon
Once we were back home Rodders was happy to snooze on his bed pad and sit on my knee but wasn't very active until about 4pm when he started playing and wanted to go in and out of the garden several times.
While he was being fairly quiet I gave him a chew. These take him about half an hour to get through and he only gets about one a week, they are supposed to be good for his teeth.
I did manage to get him to sit still on my knee for about half an hour this afternoon and comb him through. He wasn't ever so happy about it but seemed to realise I wasn't going to stop until I was done.
I have put his toys in to his old plastic bed and put the new bed pad in his crate. He can't work out why the toys are in the bed and keeps taking them out one by one, especially if he is around when I put them back!
He has been running about the house with his yoghurt pots and ball and beating up teddy but most of his toys did get played with a little today.
Out in the garden he seems to love sitting or lying facing in to the wind and his ears get blown backwards. He just barks at it! He has also been digging and has been running between the tree and the patio.
OH called to say he was on his way and typically Rodders had just settled on my knee after two hours of activity when he came in through the back door. Rodders stood straight up on my knee with his front feet on the arm of the sofa barking like mad but with his tail wagging. He then changed from barks to whimpers of delight at soon as he realised who it was and wanted to get down. Just before I went to lift him down he decided he could do it himself and jumped from the sofa to the bed pad and then hopped off there and ran to OH. He jumped up to be lifted and was squeaking with pleasure as he gave OH a wash and nibbled his ears and beard.
Once Rodder settled they both went upstairs and Rodders appeared back with one of my slippers. When I took that off him he went back to get the other one! Once OH was changed they both came back down for a snuggle and play in the conservatory before OH helped me finish off dinner.

A long evening with OH
OH got home just before 4pm. As soon as Rodders heard the back gate go he wanted out in to the garden. He started off barking but these soon turned to whimpers of delight as he saw who it was and he was soon dancing around OH's legs.
He couldn't wait for OH to get inside and pick him up for a snuggle and was so thrilled nice he was up in his arms. Rodders was snuggling in to his neck and beard and giving him a wash. It is so lovely to see them together.
Once Rodders settled a little OH put him down and they both headed upstairs for OH to get changed. Rodders appeared back downstairs with my slipper and ran straight back upstairs when I took it off him. He then came back down with OH for a play in the conservatory.
Once Rodders was tired out he came through to the lounge and climbed on to his bed pad for a snooze. OH was pottering about checking his emails and planning how to put up the Christmas Tree lights safely, we have to think about Rodders this year. I did wonder wether we should forego a tree this year but he needs to get used to them as they will be in any other house we visit at this time of year so we had better start at home.
I went through to start dinner and called Rodders through for the carrot tops. He loves these and spent a happy half hour munching through three of them. A little later I threw some of the plain chicken in to his bowl to mix with the kibble for tonights dinner. It does seem as though he clears his bowl when there is something other than kibble and tonight was no exception.
Once dinner was over and we had cleared up Rodders was happy to settle on his bed pad while we watched television. It really is cold today and it has taken a while for the house to heat up so I put one of his snuggle fleeces over him. He seemed quite happy to be snuggled up under it!

A noisy morning
At 10.40 last night Rodders got up and went for a bit of a play in the conservatory and then asked to go in to the garden for a piddle so I took the opportunity to go to bed.
After I had locked up and switched out the lights he had to be shown his treats before he would climb in to bed. Once I locked the crate he didn't make a sound.
I took ages to get off to sleep and was woken by Rodders at about 5.40am. I left him for five minutes but he wasn't quietening down so I got up and came down stairs, After a fuss he went straight to the lounge door to try and get upstairs but I had closed it. As I went to put the kettle on he asked to go in to the garden for a piddle. He came back in for five minutes and then asked to go back out again. He has been in and out quite a lot so far today and has obviously been digging by the amount of mud on his feet and beard.
He has played inside with his toys, chasing them up and down the lounge but has also tried to chew things he shouldn't.
As more people are now out and about outside he has started barking at the noise of them scraping the ice off their cars.
Rodders hasn't shown any interest in his breakfast at all today yet.

I am not even going to tell you
Five minutes not paying full attention to Rodders could have turned in to a disaster.
I thought he was chewing his lead at my feet, but when I checked it was something far worse and it could have had devastating results and I feel sick. I am not even going to tell you what it was.
He does have the devil in him, the curtains have been getting some attention and he is now in the conservatory and has been giving Teddy hell. Right now he has his crisp packet in his mouth and is kicking his ball about with his feet just to prove that he can multitask!
We have had a sudden downpour and he has been barking at the noise it makes on the conservatory, he hasn't done this before.

Oh dear!
Rodders played in the garden for ages this afternoon and I stood in the conservatory watching him for a while. He was having a high old time chasing the stones he has taken from the end of the patio and running about playing under the tree. He has also realised that there are stones at the other end of the patio.
At one point he was stood barking at the glider seat on the patio so I had to go an find out why, he had managed to get one of his stones stuck under there. I retrieved that and put it and all other stones from the grass and patio back much to his disgust.
We also played fetch with his ball and he kept bringing it back and putting it under one of the chairs and barking for me to get it out so that he could jump all over me.
And then I got a thumping headache and lay down on the sofa :-( Rodders wanted to come up and the two of us slept there for over an hour. I feel much better now though, good job as Rodders is now feeling playful.
Rodders can now reach things on the dining chairs and got my slippers down all by himself. Soon nothing will be out of his reach!

A bag of crisps
Rodders slept until I went upstairs to the bathroom where he ate the rest of his breakfast kibble.
He didn't want to come back down the stairs and had to be encouraged down each step but he was then happy to go and play in the conservatory until he heard me get a bag of crisps out of the cupboard. He then came and stood with his front legs on the sofa all the time I was eating them and talking to me in various barks, whines and squeaks. He was told that he wasn't getting anything until he sat down, luckily that took as long as it took me to eat the actual crisps!
He loves to lick the packet clean!

What a funny puppy!
I was cream crackered last night so at 10.30 I took Rodders out for a final piddle. It now seems to be the norm to sit on the grass for a few minutes before going for a piddle but I suppose that is OK if you have been woken up and taken out in to the cold.
Once back in Rodders sat on snuggle fleece while I locked up, switched out lights and got his treats ready and then climbed in to the crate and then his bed. I locked him in and said goodnight.
At about 5.15am he started his whingy noises and I rolled over and went back to sleep. At 6.40am he was barking a little but not desperate or continually so I left him a little longer and came downstairs at 6.45am. He came out of his crate for a fuss and then ran straight upstairs to check all the bedrooms. I followed him up and he was just checking if OH was in our bed. He was then happy to follow me downstairs and went in to the garden.
I thought he would be desperate for a piddle but he went straight to the drain and was trying to reach something in there, nothing would encourage him away. By this stage I was convinced that he must have wet his bed or had a piddle upstairs so went to check, no, nothing anywhere.
He eventually asked to come in and has been running about playing with his toys and asked to come up for a snuggle. Bur he is a bundle of energy and soon wanted down. I started to unpack his bag from yesterday and he heard his food bag and started to bark so I sorted out his breakfast. He ate half of it and then asked to go in to the garden for a poo and a sniff about and his just come back in to grab a drink and eat some more before dashing off to play in the conservatory.

And then I made a cuppa
Rodders moved from snuggle fleece on to his new bed pad and was asleep until I went and made a cuppa.
My sister wanted funny tea which doesn't get used very often in this house so I was searching through the larder cupboard when there was a strange noise, pretty much like when they release all the lottery balls, except instead of 47 I had released 47 million (or it seemed like that many) individual pieces of pearl barley by upending the packet. And it was on the top shelf. And it has gone everywhere.
We quickly shut Rodders out of the kitchen so I could start the mammoth clear up operation, shelf by shelf. Well, it did need tidying up but it really wasn't in my plans for today! As I was clearing up Rodders was initially happy to watch but he got more and more upset at being shut out and wasn't at all impressed once I started using the Dyson. Neither was I when it seemed to stop sucking (OH are you listening) so I had to revert to a dustpan and brush.
It does seem to have woken Rodders up good and proper, he is now playing in the conservatory!

My big sis
Once Rodders calmed down he went and lay on his bed pad for a snooze which enabled me to potter about and tidy up a bit before my big sister arrived for the night - we are off out with my nieces tomorrow for our annual Christmas Shopping trip.
When Sue arrived and rang the door bell Rodders barked but didn't bother to move off the bed pad until she was actually in the door when he came to the end of the sofa and peeked around then end. Rodders barked and barked at her, and it has taken about three hours for him to be confident enough to go anywhere near her. When he did it was to try and chew her slipper or to bite her cardigan!
He settled back down for a snooze and only really became active for about an hour and a half. In that time we played tug and he played fetch with his ball, played in the conservatory with his toys on his own and has been out to the garden for a piddle and a play. He did go in to the kitchen and bark for his dinner and actually ate almost all of it in one sitting.
When we sat down for dinner he settled down on snuggle fleece at my feet.

The lady that does
When Skevi arrived this evening I was just combing Rodders through and he wasn't happy about it. As she and I chatted he settled down and let me finish him off so no more tangles and no more gunky eyes :-)
Once Skevi started work Rodders was happy to follow her about barking at the mop and swiffer, he is getting so much more confident with her. She talks to him like she talks to her little one but I think she is a little un-nerved by the barking.
As she tidied up his toys to clean the conservatory Rodders was darting around but didn't take them like he does when I tidy them up. He wasn't sure what to make of her moving the furniture either!
While she was upstairs I started to cook dinner and Rodders brought his ball to me so, in amongst chopping and stirring, I was stopping to throw his ball for him.
As OH called I kicked Rodders' ball and in bounced off the wall and straight in to his bowl on top of his kibble, bet I couldn't so that again if I tried! He was very confused by it and didn't even try to lift it out.
I am still working on the freezer but it is taking a while to defrost. I had hoped to get everything back in it before bed, this may be optimistic!
I had a bit of a battle trying to get the worm & flea treatment on Rodders this evening but it is done for another month. I will need to get him weighed at the vets as I think he will need the bigger dosage next month. They are happy to swap it out for free so that is OK.

A slow start but a busy morning!
After OH left for work Rodders had a nap while I caught up with the blog. It was then time to get washed and dressed and he wasn't too interested in the kibble filled Kong but was quite happy to wander about with slippers in his mouth instead, he doesn't seem to mind if it is mine or OH's. It kept him quiet and gave me time to do things!
I then sorted out the front bedroom and changed it from a twin room back to a single room, put out fresh towels in the bathroom and brought the dirty ones down to put in the machine, put liver treats in the oven and then went out and cleared up leaves. Rodders helped (!) with the last activity.
After a rest and some breakfast it was time to empty the freezer in to the cool box and throw away anything that was past it's best and switch it off to defrost. I threw a chunk of ice at Rodders who was playing in the passage, he had a lot of fun chasing it about, picking it up and then dropping it to bat about with his paws.
Once we were back in the kitchen I emptied and filled the washing machine and he went for a play in the conservatory before asking to go out. He was investigating under the tree until he heard a noise in the garages and started barking. When he didn't let up I went to see what was wrong just as Pat next door came in the back gate. We stopped for a chat, apparently Bob has been inside all week with a hacking cough and is feeling quite rough. She said hello to Rodders and I lifted him up for a fuss over the fence. They did hear him one night this week but thought that Bob's coughing had disturbed him.
We stayed out and poop scooped the garden and Rodders was trying to bite the bag so got a firm no. He tried again and then tried to jump away he caught his leg on the trowel, after that he kept his distance. He stayed out there while I went to the bin at the front and has just come in. By the amount of mud on him I think he has been digging.
He is now dashing about the conservatory chasing yoghurt pots.

Rodders getting dopey
After playing in the conservatory and in the garden Rodders asked to come up on my knee and seemed to be settling down for a snooze so sat him on the floor and explained that I needed to go out and he had to stay here in his bed and he would get puppy treats.
Yes, I am aware that I sound nuts but he really does seem to understand.
Anyway, I put on my coat and asked him to get in his bed. He jus sat there looking at me so I gave in and lifted him in to his bed, gave him his treats and locked the crate. There was silence as I walked out the door.
I nipped to the tip to drop off what I forgot yesterday and then went to Tesco. As I got back home and got out of the car I could hear him barking. He went quiet as I unlocked the door and then started squeaking once he saw me. I have no idea why he was barking but after a quick fuss we went in to the garden and he piddled fairly quickly so maybe it was that.
While I was out I missed a delivery from the postman so need to go to the sorting office tomorrow.
Once Rodders had been in the garden we came in and I started to put away the shopping. We had a bit of a battle as Rodders wanted to bite the shopping bags and then me for stopping him. I didn't resort to the lead but he did get a couple of checks using the choke chain.
OH mentioned yesterday that Rodders will soon be able to get on the sofa by himself. If he wants up he stands with his front feet up on the cushion and is trying to push off with his back legs. When he can't get up there he barks and then looks at me. I think a trip to Dunelm to buy a throw may be needed before he can get up there on his own.
He has also taken to barking at anything he wants and can't get to, be it a toy stuck under a chair or the oven gloves hanging just out of reach. He does come away when told no though which is good.
He has just taken his new bed pad for a drag around the lounge. I think this bundle of energy needs a run in Gadebridge Park!

A trip out
Once Rodders came in from the garden he wanted up on my knee and very quickly settled down for a snooze. I decided that it was time I went out so told him that I was going out and he needed to go in his bed.
I put him down on the floor while I got my coat on and sorted out his treats, he just sat on snuggle fleece and watched me. Once I was ready to go I popped him in his bed with his treats and closed the crate. Not a sound as I left him.
I got to the tip, the petrol station and then down the town for a bit of shopping and Rodders was on his own for almost two hours.
There was silence as I let myself in the front door and through to the lounge. I think he was asleep as he didn't squeak until I was at the kitchen door and when he got out of the crate for a fuss his tummy was all toasty warm.
Once he had been up on my knee for a fuss he was happy to go and play with his toys in the conservatory. Funny little thing never wants to go out when you first come in.
We won't mention that his bed pad was out of his bed and he was sleeping on snuggle fleece in it!

A more active morning
I let Rodders sleep for about an hour and then made him come upstairs with me while I got washed and dressed. He settled on the bathmat while I washed and the bed as I got dressed. We said our usual good morning to Pentland before coming downstairs.
Rodders was happy to play in the conservatory for a little while and then wanted in to the garden for a piddle and a run about. Once back inside he wanted to play so we have played fetch with the ball and a bit of tug. After another play on his own he has gone back out in to the garden and is digging in the stones at the end of the patio.
