It's all go

We got back from the vets and I started to get everything ready to go away later in the day.

At 9.30am I popped Rodders back in to the car to nip to Puppy School to see Sam to explain that we can't do today's class as Rodders is poorly and, now I am working, we can't do the Friday class anymore so we will be back to the Saturday class in January. I also wanted to get Rodders a new choke chain. Sam checked and the only choke chain they had was a bit big for Rodders but we heeled around the room to make sure that he couldn't escape from it when it went slack. We had a chat about how he was doing and she can see how much more confident he is.

Back home I swapped jackets and put Rodders in his crate so that I could nip to Tesco as I needed some final bits to make dip - I would be sent home if I turned up at Christmas without it!

Rodders was a bit fed up of all the time I was spending in the kitchen making dip and he took himself off to his bed for a while. He was happier when I had finished and he came upstairs with me while I finished packing my bag. I started to bring down the bags of Christmas presents while he sat on the landing chewing my slipper.

He then wanted to go in the garden which meant that I could pack most of the car without worrying about him. Once he came in I took him for a quick walk around the neighbourhood while I delivered the last of the Christmas cards and then put him back in the lounge while I finished loading the car.

We managed to leave home just before 2pm and stopped at the pet shop at St Albans for some bits I had forgotten and then headed up the A1 towards Oakham. The weather was getting awful, what started as a cold morning had gone through drizzle and was now chucking it down with rain. At one point we were down  to 50mph as the spray was so bad. Then we found out that there was a problem on the A1 and we may need to divert off. Then the traffic news said the road was open and then, when we were almost beyond the point of no return, they changed their mind. Grrrr.

We found our way off the A1 and on to the A47 and got stuck behind someone that thought it was good to drive at between 35-45mph. By the time we got to Uppingham there was quite a daisy chain of frustrated drivers behind him. Luckily for me he turned left as I turned right. Three hours after setting off we eventually got to my big sisters!

While in the car I managed to talk to both my sisters and OH. Rodders wasn't bothered by that or the fact that he had been in the car for ages and he didn't make a sound all the way.

After we had said hello to my brother in law and Ailie I took Rodders in to the garden for a piddle while they emptied my car. Ailie had great fun putting all the presents under the tree and Rodders hasn't really paid them any attention at all. My sister was away having her hair done and got back about half an hour later.

I gave Rodders his tea about 5.30pm and then took him up the road for a walk and let him have a runabout on  his extendable lead. He kept getting bits of tree stuck in his legs and when this happens he just sits down until I remove it, bit difficult in the dark but we managed!

About 7.30pm my other two nieces arrived with a husband and a boyfriend. It was good to see them all together, I can't remember when that last happened. It was quite noisy and Rodders took a moment before he decided that he was happy with all these people around and then threw himself in to things and was getting lots of fuss. I made sure that everyone is aware that they cannot feed him anything because of his poorly tummy.

I tried to keep Rodders out of the kitchen while dinner preparation were afoot as he was trying to scavenge. We all sat down for dinner and Rodders was (mostly) on his snuggle fleece beside me. He did escape under the table a couple of times, I hope he didn't find anything to eat.

Once dinner was over I gave him his supper. He seems much happier of 75g and is taking a little longer to eat it.

There are so many people moving about that he found it hard to settle and probably didn't fall asleep on his bed pad until gone 10.30pm this evening. I will take him out in to the garden before bed, just not sure when that will be!

I have another job!

In the middle of worrying about Rodders I also had to focus on me.

I already have one temp job that I am supposed to be starting on Monday and I was interviewed yesterday for another one that also starts on Monday so I need to know quickly if I am to let anyone down. I had hoped to hear very early this morning and when I hadn't heard anything by 9.15am I called the agency. They had already dropped them an email and were going to call them by 10am if there hadn't been an answer.

At 10.20am the first agency called to ask why I hadn't returned the paperwork so I had to explain my position. They understood that I would have to go with the better paid and longer term contract if I got it and asked me to let them know as quickly as I could.

As I put the phone down on them it went again and it was the second agency. The job is mine if I want it but they can't get me the hourly rate I wanted. I had to agree to drop by £1 an hour so not the end of the world.

I rang OH to let him know and sent a text to my sisters & nieces. Everyone seems very happy for me :-)

I also had to ring agency one to let them know that to was good news for me and bad news for them. I also asked them to pass on my apologies to the 1st company, I really hate letting people down especially this late on.

A day in London

The plan was to meet at my niece Louise's flat in Shepherds Bush where Pete, Ailie's boyfriend, was going to look after Rodders. We had already heard that Ailie was poorly and that Pete had been dispatched to the shops for some Imodium before he headed over to meet us.

It was quite an easy drive in to London and we found a free parking spot quite close by. Rodders walked really nicely to Louise's and managed up three flights of stairs without too much bother. Louise told us that Ailie was on her way with Pete, brave girl, not sure I would fancy the tube with a dodgy tummy.

Louise was out of milk so I carried Rodders downstairs and we all walked to the local supermarket for some. Rodders and I had to stay outside and I got him to go down and stood over him like we do at training school. He was so good, we were there for about 15 minutes and he only moved when a man approached him. Rodders tried to get behind me but did go back in to a sit between my legs. This man did seem to know about dogs and he spent about 5 minutes gently talking to both Rodders and I and did manage to fuss him. Rodders wasn't so impressed when a local drinker (the alcohol fumes would have knocked you out and it was only 10.30am) stopped to talk to him!

We walked back to Louise's and he climbed the stairs again. Ailie and Peter arrived as we were drinking tea. I had got a couple of toys out for Rodders to play with to try and stop him from chewing the Reindeer Rug. We all sat about chatting and decided that Pete would join us for lunch so he and Rodders went off to my car to bring back the crate. Once they returned, and Rodders had climbed the stairs again, I made sure that Pete knew what Rodders could and couldn't do and we went off to Westfield shopping.

Poor Ailie really wasn't well and kept going very pale over the day, how she managed to shop at all is beyond me. I think we now know where all the loo's are in the shopping centre though. Even at lunchtime she could only manage water.

When Pete joined us for lunch he said that Rodders had slept for most of the morning but he was planning a trip to the park for the afternoon.

After lunch we hit the shops again and Sue finished her Christmas shopping and I made a start on mine. It wasn't our most successful shopping trip! We wandered around for hours and the girls tried on a fair bit but just not the right bits!

We walked back to Louise's and Rodders was very pleased to see me. The report from Pete is that he has been really good but I am not sure that he would tell me if he hadn't!

I nipped off to get the car, much to Rodders disgust, and then said goodbye to everyone before heading downstairs with Rodders. Lucky me, Pete carried the crate and Sue carried my shopping!

My big sis

Once Rodders calmed down he went and lay on his bed pad for a snooze which enabled me to potter about and tidy up a bit before my big sister arrived for the night - we are off out with my nieces tomorrow for our annual Christmas Shopping trip.

When Sue arrived and rang the door bell Rodders barked but didn't bother to move off the bed pad until she was actually in the door when he came to the end of the sofa and peeked around then end. Rodders barked and barked at her, and it has taken about three hours for him to be confident enough to go anywhere near her. When he did it was to try and chew her slipper or to bite her cardigan!

He settled back down for a snooze and only really became active for about an hour and a half. In that time we played tug and he played fetch with his ball, played in the conservatory with his toys on his own and has been out to the garden for a piddle and a play. He did go in to the kitchen and bark for his dinner and actually ate almost all of it in one sitting.

When we sat down for dinner he settled down on snuggle fleece at my feet.

An afternoon and evening in Houghton

Rodders and I got in the car to head to my sister's to celebrate her birthday a day early with my three nieces.

As always, Rodders was quiet in the car, he settles very easily in his crate as long as he gets a treat as he is put in. We hadn't got far when OH called. This is the first time that the car phone has gone with Rodders in the car and as soon as he heard OH he started to cry, OH apologised and said he would go, I said he should stay talking to Rodders! It worked and Rodders stopped crying.

Once we got close to Houghton I rang to check they were there as I would need help to get everything out of the car. My sister suggested that I drove down the lane initially which I did. When I got there they were all having a picnic so I let myself in with Rodders and the first load, made sure he was OK and he and Finnan had a biscuit and went back for the 2nd load.

Everyone was looking at Rodders (well he is such a cute puppy) and not paying a lot of attention to Finnan so Kirsty took her in the garden. What did she do? She walked straight in to the pond, not the same one as last week either! She came out black and smelly and had to go straight in the bath and then be towelled off and blow dried. Rodders was very interested in all this activity, especially all the whinging Finnan was doing.

Kirsty and I nipped next door with Rodders to check it was OK for me to leave my car in their (huge) drive. They both came out to see Rodders and then let their dog out to meet him. She was a terrier like I have never seen before, black & tan, with big ears and like a slim doberman. she and Rodders got on really well and were prancing about head down and bum in the air for ages. It was so funny to watch.

Once Finnan was dry the girls wanted to go for a walk around the village and learn more about our old haunts, Lisa was a baby when we left in 1985 and the twins were not born until 1986. We turned right out of the cottage and went through the lanes, round the back of our ld family home and across the road to head down the lane to the Mill. Then back down Mill Street stopping off to see the progress on Kirsty's friends cottage which is being extended and then back through the centre of the village and back home. Rodders was very happy to trot along chasing Finnan or one of us and didn't sit down at all unless we had stopped to look at something.

On route we met up with an old friend and his Old English Sheepdog Puppy, Ziggy, who is 11 months old and HUGE! To start with Rodders wasn't sure what to make of this giant and kept his distance but as we all stood talking he got brave and went to have a closer look.

On our way back we met another miniature Schnauzer, Rodders was very interested and seemed to know that she was a kindred spirit.

Back at the cottage we all sat around drinking, eating, and chatting and laughing at Kirtsy's Wedding Album from 1975. Rodders curled himself up against Lisa's leg and had a snooze. This is very unusual as he normally needs to be with OH or me.

Rodders and Finnan didn't get along quite so well this week. Rodders has got braver and more playful and Finnan is an old lady who doesn't like playing with young whipper snapper's so there was a bit of grizzling from her. We left them to sort themselves out.

I took both of them in to the garden while the girls went through the Christmas Decorations that Kirsty is having to trim down. We have all come away with a selection of the ones she is happy to lose, the rest are going to a car boot sale next weekend. Rodders couldn't work out why he had to be on a lead (the garden is not secure) and didn't think it was fair as Finnan was loose. Sorry Rodders, but I know she won't run off and I am not so sure about you! Wonder if I could use a lunge rein on him!

Back inside we shut Finnan in the lounge with Kirsty and the girls so that I could give Rodders his supper. He ate most of it without any fuss although I did have to throw some kibble on the floor to get him to eat a bit more. Getting him to drink out of Finnan's water bowl was a bit more difficult.

We were going to the pub for an earlyish dinner so just before 7pm I out Rodders in the crate in the car and drove through the village to the pub, got out and walked away. I have never done this before and had no idea how he would react but this is the sort of time of day when he collapses so I hoped he would just sleep. He didn't make a sound as I left him and one of Kirsty's friends checked him on her way in, silence. I slipped out again while people were eating starters and all was quiet.

After I had eaten I was going to slip away, let Rodders out for a piddle and then head home. That didn't work, everyone wanted to see him and they all came out. After he had been given a fuss by everyone and had a snuggle with Colin we had a walk around the garden but there were too many new smells and people around so he wasn't interested in having a piddle so I out him back in the car.

Part way home OH rang, Rodders hadn't made a sound until then but he started crying again. It is so funny how OH has that effect on him. Once OH talked to him he went quiet again and we got home just before ten.

Rodders walked in the house and straight through to go out in the garden. He had a piddle and then came back in thinking he wanted a play. He chewed his bone while I made a cuppa but decided he would rather curl up on my lap. Once he was asleep I moved him and snuggle fleece to the floor. It has been a long day and he is exhausted.

We have another long day tomorrow. This is the plans for the grooming workshop - eeeek!

Time: workshop starting at 10am
a Lunch of jacket potatoes with a variety of fillings will be provided
You will all receive a folder with handout sheets, note pads and pens for you all to make your own notes with, you are all welcome to bring your cameras to take before and after pictures or to photograph any other thing you think will help you to remember.
Please ensure your dogs are brushed through, we will cover brushing correctly and you will all be bathing and drying your dogs before trimming.
There are some spare overalls for those who do not have one yet.
Please remember to bring all your grooming equipment with you so we can show you how to use what you have or to tell you what you will need to groom your dog yourself.

Awake but not for long!

OH rang on his way to the hotel, he was running low on fuel and, knowing whereabouts he was, I diverted him off to a Tesco close by.

Rodders woke up after about an hour and a half when Pete arrived to pick up Ailie's toothbrush. He came in to give Rodders a fuss and, for once, he didn't try and hide behind me :-) We saw Pete off at the door and Rodders went straight to the patio door so I let him out for a piddle.

He came back in and played for a bit in the conservatory and I ambled through to the kitchen to unload the washing machine. The next thing I hear is him barking so back I go and Rodders is stood at the door wanting out. It is the first time he has actually barked to go out so I rang OH to let him know, he didn't seem very impressed :-(

When Rodders came in, having pooped, we had another play in the conservatory. I grabbed the camera and tried to take some pictures but all Rodders wanted to do was bite the camera or crawl all over me so I gave up after a while. I went in to the kitchen and made dinner which involved a tin of tuna. I put a little in Rodders bowl but he has had a sniff and walked away very unimpressed.

Once dinner was cooked I went and sat at the dining table and Rodders arrived at my side and barked. He wanted to settle down and his snuggle fleece wasn't there! So I got up and went and got it and he was soon snoozing at my feet.

After dinner I went to clear up in the kitchen and put the dishwasher on. Rodders sat patiently by the sofa waiting for me to move the snuggle fleece. I am fast learning that I am here to serve the puppy alone!

Funnily enough he is now snoozing at my feet. And I haven't had to settle him on my knee :-)

Back on our own

Rodders and I thanked Ailie and Pete for looking after him so well and we were back on our own. Rodders was happy to go down eventually and playing in the conservatory on his own. He asked to go out and poo'd and had a play in the garden.

He barked to come back in, this boy knows if he does that he gets a puppy treat after his fuss as long as he sits nicely.

He had a play in the conservatory, mostly on his own, but is testing me a little to see if it is OK to bite me or my slippers. The answer to that young man is NO and it earns you a time out. Not that he seemed bothered he was off to play again.

Found him sniffing in the kitchen and asked if he wanted to go in the garden and he shot to the back door. On route for a piddle there were a few distractions, the wind, birds taking off, things to chew but he eventually did what he had to do!

He really does seem to be having a mad few minutes, off to see if I can calm him down a bit!

I am glad to be home and to see my little man!

So how has he been?

Apparently Rodders was a bit upset when I left and didn't want to play or go on anyones knee on his snuggle fleece :-( He took himself off and slept on the fleece that covers his crate for over an hour.

Then Pete came in to his own and amused Rodders for ages - not sure who enjoyed it most!

Rodders ate a hearty lunch, has had another nap and he hasn't piddled in the house at all. What a star!

I took him straight in the garden when he calmed down a bit and he piddled out there.

Shower time

Well the Kong didn't work so well this time, I got me washed and my hair washed but before I managed to condition Rodders was barking. It may have been that he heard Ailie get up but who knows, I tried talking to him and he quietened for a few seconds. He quite liked licking the water off me as I came out the shower though!

Back down stairs and he was being a little shy with Ailie and has taken himself off to the conservatory to play with his nylabone.

I need to go and dry my hair shortly and will have to leave him down here. Wonder what he will make of it?

I have a wedding to prepare for!

An evening with Ailie & Pete

Ailie and Pete arrived just after 7 and Rodders was sound asleep and had to be woken.

He wasn't sure to start with and refused to leave my side, a mixture of being half asleep and exhausted. He gradually came too, helped by Pete giving him a chin rub. He then felt safe enough to go up on Ailie's knee on snuggle blanket.

I got them a drink once Rodders would leave my side, it is good to have them here! I managed to go and make some beds while he stayed with Ailie and Pete and Rodders gained in confidence and went to play with Teddy for a bit while I got his supper ready. It would appear that he is too tired and is beyond eating :-( Poor starved baby!

I nipped out and got us a chinese and although Rodders was happy playing when I left he still cried. When I came back 15 minutes later he was very happy to see me and I got a snuggle. He lay on snuggle fleece and went to sleep while we ate, bless!

And then, horrid Mummy that I am I took him out for a piddle. It looked as though he was having none of it and he just lay on the grass and went back to sleep! I dashed in to get the camera but by the time I got back he had thought better of it and was standing on the path. He then kindly performed his duty and came back in.

He has just flopped on snuggle fleece at my feet after being on my knee for a few minutes.

Settled

After another run around the garden and a bit of a play Rodders went and sat on the rolled up carpet looking dopey. I asked if he was a tiredy boy and he came straight to me. I gathered everything I needed and sat him down on my lap. He settled very quickly and is now snoozing at my feet on snuggle fleece until Ailie & Pete get here.

The tired, fractious, puppy

Rodders has been playing for a while and is now tired again but today he doesn't seem to want to give in to it. He has been on and off my knee but he is just a wriggling mass of mischief.

I gave in and put him on the patio table for a brush which he wasn't very impressed at and then we came in and I have come in to the kitchen. He has had a bit of a play and has barked to go out (and to come back in - that way he gets a bit of a fuss).

This could play in to my hands as I want to take Ailie and Pete out for dinner this evening to say well done to her for finally qualifying as an architect after 7 long years. Found her card by the way, it was in the bag of Christmas presents :-) Anyway, if Rodders is exhausted he may not make too much noise while we are out. Mind you Bob and Pat are away and Pete reckons he is deaf so it won't matter too much. I just don't want Rodders stressed out.

Maybe I can give him his supper as we go out. Not sure that will work as he hasn't been fed in his crate before. We will see.

So far we have had that one small piddle on the upstairs landing.

Ailie and Pete should be here in about an hour, need to get her to help me make beds as I haven't had a minute to do them!

An active morning and then peace

It seems that Rodders can be active for about 2 hours before he needs a nap.

He has been in and out of the garden and has played on his own in the conservatory. He asked to go out and found many distractions on the patio before he made it on to the grass to piddle and poop, but he is now ignoring where he piddled there last night. He has had a slightly squitty botty last night and this morning, is that too many puppy treats or the vegetation he has been eating in the garden? Or, heaven forbid, the dairlylea in his Kong!

I have carried on removing myself behind the baby gate in the kitchen when he gets bitey and this seems to be working. He goes off and finds something else to chew, not always appropriate either! He has earnt a couple of Aaaaaghs when he is gnawing on something he shouldn't.

Eventually he got tired and went and sat on top of the rolled up rug looking dopey. I picked him up and did a bathroom trip for me and then made sure I had everything to hand in the lounge and came and settled him down on my knee. He has now been transferred to the floor and is snoozing at my feet.

Not sure that settling him down on my knee is a good thing but he seems to know he is not allowed on my knee or the furniture unless he is on snuggle fleece. OH got him to settle the same way the other night so it doesn't seem to be just me. This is good as I am going to have to leave him with my niece Ailie for the day tomorrow while I go to a wedding.

And we have had no piddles in the house so far today, this is a huge improvement as there had been three by this time yesterday.

In out, in out

Rodders came back in to much fuss and a puppy treat and played in the conservatory for a little while before asking do go out again.

He had a piddle while I stood on the patio and was happy playing until he heard noises at the garages, we stood on the patio with me talking gently and him deciding if he was brave enough to move, He eventually did and stayed out playing for a little while when I came in.

I have braved the photo's I collected yesterday. Mum looked so well in them it is awful to think that she died within a month of them being taken. Miss you Granny! There were others of my God-daughters birthday, my 50th birthday lunch and my gorgeous nieces  on their birthday celebration.

Tuesday evening

My niece, Lisa, had asked if she could come to meet her new cousin (!) and so while OH entertained Rodders I finished off dinner.

Rodders was a bit worn out to be honest and not at his best by the time she arrived and was being a real wuss, hiding behind me and chasing me wherever I went. But Lisa, being the ace photographer she is, managed to get the best photo of him so far.

He slept at my feet as we had dinner, as he did the night before.  Once Lisa left we had a fairly quiet evening and Rodders went in to his crate at bedtime and only cried for 5 minutes - that's 20 minutes in total so far this week which I count as a result!
