Quite a busy day

After I showered and dressed OH called in to see us for an hour. As he arrived I was putting on some washing and Rodders was playing in the conservatory. He didn't hear the back door until almost the last moment but was thrilled to see who it was and wanted straight up for a snuggle. We all ended up having a group hug as I think it was the only way I was going to get to say hello too!

OH and I had a cuppa and a bit of breakfast and then he had a play with Rodders while I brought the bin back in. OH and I then popped upstairs to fit my new cool pad to my bed in the hope that it helps me to sleep better. Finally we all had a snuggle on the sofa before it was time for OH to go. As OH and I had a hug goodbye Rodders was making some strange noises, I think he is getting a bit jealous.

As normal Rodders trotted out to the gate with OH but when I called him back he got halfway and stopped for a piddle. OH managed to get out the gate safely which is the main thing. Rodders stayed out there for a little while sniffing about and squeaking a bit. I don't think he had heard OH's car go as he parked somewhere different today.

I emptied & reloaded the washing machine and Rodders chased his toys about.

Once my hair was dry I put on my dog walking gear and got one of my new hat and glove sets ready so that we could head to Gadebridge Park. Rodders was very excited to be going out and was jumping up. I managed to get him to sit and wait at the door and walked him to the car.

Once parked I got him out the car and put his lead back on. As we were walking to the edge of the park two ladies with three dogs were coming off. Their dogs started barking and so Rodders joined in, they seemed to be giving us a wide berth so I didn't let Rodders say hello to them.

As we got to the park I made him sit and swapped to the extendable lead so that he could have more freedom. He was very happy running about and he got to meet many dogs that were off the lead. Rodders wanted to run off and play with some of them and wasn't happy to be on his lead. Luckily some of them were happy to play with him and he got to run about with a Golden Retriever and a Chocolate Lab amongst others.

Rodders was very good at coming when called and he was happy to just sit and watch what was going on about him several times. We walked our way around the whole park and the only time he was a little nervous was when some children came past us on bikes and scooters. He wasn't bothered by a young lad in a wheelchair, even when he asked if he was Toto from the wizard of Oz. Rodders had a good look at the River Gade and looked as though he might try to go in there at one point but he saw another dog which distracted him. As we got back to where we started he sat while I swapped leads again so that we could walk to the car.

As we were about to get in the car he spotted a Staffie pup and wanted to play. It looked like a smaller version of Molly from Puppy Party and was called Fletcher. They started off sniffing each other but it was obvious that Fletcher wanted to play. When Fletcher got a bit rough Rodders put him in his place by barking at him, when Fletcher tried again Rodders let him play for a little while and then growled at him. The couple with him were not very happy about it but I explained that they were just playing and working out where the boundaries are and both dogs had their tales up. After a little while we parted company and I put Rodders back in his car crate.

Once we were back home I gave Rodders his lunch and after a bit of a play and a trip to the garden he was happy to have a snooze.

He woke up with the devil in him and, as well as playing with his toys, he was up to all sorts of mischief. The door stop kept being dragged across the floor and then he started to take the washing off the radiator. He was found chewing the door mat at the back door when I thought he was playing quietly with his bone.

He was in and out of the garden and it was nice to hear him playing with the stones on the patio again. I don't think he has done this properly for almost two weeks.

He is barking a lot today and it is sometimes difficult to work out why. I really hope my neighbours can't hear him or don't mind too much.

Gadebridge Park Walk

I managed to get Rodders out of the house in record time, even if he did run off with my shoe as I was putting on my wellies!

We drove down to the only free carpark and then set off from there. Rodders is very nosy and wanted to have a good look at the Skate and BMX Park and is interested in what all passers by are doing.

He generally walks very well and comes back when called, unless there is something more interesting to be doing. But I am still not let him off the lead though!

He did allow a young girl, maybe 4, to give him a fuss, which was really good but he got a bit spooked by a bouncy Beagle.

We managed to walk all the way round two thirds of the park but he had started to slow down towards the end. He did also have his first encounter with water as we were walking alongside the River Gade, at one point I thought he might try to go in and test it out but he changed his mind.

Once home he was happy to settle down for a nap, I think I need one too but there is washing to bring in and I am in need of a cuppa!

Rodders getting dopey

After playing in the conservatory and in the garden Rodders asked to come up on my knee and seemed to be settling down for a snooze so sat him on the floor and explained that I needed to go out and he had to stay here in his bed and he would get puppy treats.

Yes, I am aware that I sound nuts but he really does seem to understand.

Anyway, I put on my coat and asked him to get in his bed. He jus sat there looking at me so I gave in and lifted him in to his bed, gave him his treats and locked the crate. There was silence as I walked out the door.

I nipped to the tip to drop off what I forgot yesterday and then went to Tesco. As I got back home and got out of the car I could hear him barking. He went quiet as I unlocked the door and then started squeaking once he saw me. I have no idea why he was barking but after a quick fuss we went in to the garden and he piddled fairly quickly so maybe it was that.

While I was out I missed a delivery from the postman so need to go to the sorting office tomorrow.

Once Rodders had been in the garden we came in and I started to put away the shopping. We had a bit of a battle as Rodders wanted to bite the shopping bags and then me for stopping him. I didn't resort to the lead but he did get a couple of checks using the choke chain.

OH mentioned yesterday that Rodders will soon be able to get on the sofa by himself. If he wants up he stands with his front feet up on the cushion and is trying to push off with his back legs. When he can't get up there he barks and then looks at me. I think a trip to Dunelm to buy a throw may be needed before he can get up there on his own.

He has also taken to barking at anything he wants and can't get to, be it a toy stuck under a chair or the oven gloves hanging just out of reach. He does come away when told no though which is good.

He has just taken his new bed pad for a drag around the lounge. I think this bundle of energy needs a run in Gadebridge Park!

Plans go to pot

The plan was to go to Pets at Home and then to Gadebridge Park for a walk.

I put my coat on and Rodders lead, grabbed the bed and off we went to the car. Once we got to Pets at Home Rodders started barking as soon as he got out the car, I think he knows this place too well.

We had a wander about and picked up some dog treats (for Rodders & Finnans Christmas present) and the pet food holder and talked to people that we met including an 8 week old Jack Russell puppy called Mia (very tiny, very gorgeous!) and a toddler who was very excited to see Rodders bbefore we bumped in to Kirsty who works there, she loves Mini Schnauzers and wants one of her own and is keeping her eye out for a rescue dog. She has met Rodders before and couldn't believe how much he had grown. She was very patient and waited for Rodders to approach her before she fussed him, her patience paid off and she got a snuggle too. He also made friends with what looked like a small white samoyed and a couple of GSD's - size really doesn't matter to Rodders!

By the time we came out of there the weather had turned, the wind was up, it was spitting with rain and almost dark, Gadebridge Park is off the menu then!

I decided to go back to the Pet Supermarket at St Albans to see if we could find another bed bad, similar to what we got on Sunday but oblong. Rodders barked his way around most of the store until we got to the toys. The cheeky monkey found himself a toy! Luckily it was only £2.49, one of those old fashioned rubber dumbbells with a bell in it. He happily chased it around the store while I looked at the beds and other things. Several people stopped to talk to him but there were no dogs in today. We didn't buy a bed, all the right shaped ones seemed to have hard covers and I wanted something fleecy and snuggly. I suppose it would have been OK with his snuggle fleece on top.

Once we got home Rodders was happy to run about playing with his new toy and his yoghurt pots and had a mad 5 minutes while he was flying about. He then asked to go out in the garden for a piddle and a play and came back in soaking.

We then had a game of tug before he asked to go back out. Once he was back in he was happy to settle down on snuggle fleece, his first nap since about 1pm. We have moved through to the lounge and he is now on his new bed pad. I will give him an hour before giving him his supper.

Off to the Park

Rodders was out playing in the garden so I managed to get my coat and wellies on without too much fuss but he nearly did summersaults once he spotted me so getting him to sit to have his lead on took a while, so did sit and wait at the front door.

Once outside John from over the green asked if he could meet Rodders and I explained that he is a bit nervous of people. Luckily John is used to dogs and so he waited for Rodders to approach him which he did quite quickly and then backed off.

I popped Rodders in his car crate with a treat and then drove down to the Old Town and found a spot to park along Gadebridge Park wall which meant parallel parking. It would seem Rodders doesn't like the noise the parking sensors make as he barked a bit!

I put his lead on and got him out the car. We walked through the gate and across the grass to the main path and turned left towards the town. Rodders walked quite nicely but he doesn't seem too keen on pushchairs or bikes. We met a lady with an elderly mini schnauzer (that can't see too well) and a sausage dog/jack russell cross. We let the dogs sniff each other and she gave Rodders a fuss.

We walked to the end of the park and turned left and left to come back down the Old Town High Street. I was being nosy as it is closed to traffic today for some filming. Must be something from around the time of the Queens Coronation by the decorations and bunting. They have also changed some of the shop windows to that period and there were a few old cars about. I think it must have been lunch break though as there wasn't much going on. Good job really as Rodders pooped half way down!

We then walked down the side of the dentist, across the car park and back in to the park and turned right back towards the car.

There were some children playing with a football and Rodders wanted to go and join in, it was a bit of a job to get him past them but we got there. We walked to the far gate and then along the road back to the car.

Gadebridge Park

I drove us to Gadebridge Park to see if a change of scene would get Rodders walking better and did it!

As soon as I got Rodders out of the car he was off, skipping along, and having a great time. We walked out of the car park and over the bridge and all of a sudden there was third huge expanse of green and he was a bit overwhelmed and sat down to have a good look around.

A lady came towards us with a Jack Russell and she stopped to talk but said her dog wasn't the best to socialise with so we kept away from her.

Rodders could hear a little one crying and he wasn't very keen on going that way so we walked straight on. He was having a great time sniffing and chasing the leaves. We were almost the whole way across when we met a welsh collie and his owner. He stopped to give Rodders a fuss and told his dog to be gentle with the puppy. Rodders tried to hide again. Slowly he got braver and started to sniff the other dog and wasn't paying attention when a further two dogs caught us up so he was a bit surprised to find another dog sniffing his rear end! He was fine with it, but again, by the time he was comfortable and wanted to play they were off on their walk.

We walked the rest of the way across the park and turned right towards the old town and then right again across the grass. So many people stopped to talk to him, he was OK with some and wanted to hide from others.  He was disgusted when a lady asked if he was a Yorkie!

Once we were on the grass he wanted to run, I upped my walking pace but it wasn't quite fast enough for him. I wonder quite how fast he would run if he was off the lead - I'm not even chancing that just yet and certainly not before he has his microchip.

We turned right again and got back to the bridge but he still seemed to be happy walking so we carried on another 100 yards. He then sat and decided he wasn't moving so I turned around to head for the car. He came a little way and sat so I tried enticing him with his training toy, it worked for a while and then he sat and played with it. Then he lay down so I picked him up and put him back on his feet, he walked back to the bridge and was quite happy to sit while I talked to two ladies with a welsh collie. He then skipped back to the car.

He seems to like Gadebridge Park!
