Not such a good walk

After we did so well yesterday I had high hopes for today. Rodders was messing about but I managed to get the choke chain on and then the lead, while managing to out my wellies on and stopping him escaping up the stairs!

Once we were out of the door I realised that the choke chain was on the wrong way around so had to stop, disconnect the lead and attach it to the normal collar, take the choke chain off and back on again before re-attaching the lead. While this was going on he was trying to eat my gloves.

We were back to walk, sit, walk even once we got to the rugby field and I had to resort to the training toy to get him moving.

We bumped in to a couple with two dogs, a westie and a miniature schnauzer called Biscuit. They were both quite vocal and Rodders sat behind me and just looked at them for a while before getting braver and coming forward for a sniff, but he didn't fancy playing with these two at all. Once we had all passed the time of the day we moved on. We had only walked a third of the field but it is tough when Rodders is messing about and I don't like dragging him.

We did a bit of the road and there wasn't too much traffic about and he walked quite nicely, even past two children with their Mum.

We came back via Jane and Kev's and in to Pentland so only a shot walk but we were out for half an hour. Once inside I took his lead off before he managed to get upstairs.

We had an answer phone message from the dog training school to say we can switch to the Friday class, yippee! We can get our weekend back :-)

Our second day at school

We did so well this morning I even managed breakfast before we went to school.

We were the first ones there again so we had a wander about on the grass in case Rodders needed a piddle, he shouldn't as he had one as soon as we got out the house.

Two further puppies turned up, Mylie a welsh collie and a beagle who's name I have forgotten already. They were in their 8th and 10th week so Rodders was way behind them and it showed during the class. The class before us came and mingled like they did last week and Rodders was much happier this time, he wanted to play with some of the big dogs but wasn't sure about others.

This week we had a different teacher, she and Sam share alternate saturdays apparently. We did puppy socialisation by handing round our dogs and giving them treats - theirs were too big for Rodders so I had to share out some of our treats!

We then went to the field and Rodders walked most of the way, happy trotting after the other puppies but nowhere near to heal. Apparently that will come! Once in the field we did some heel work and I mentioned that Rodders hasn't been very happy to walk this week and prefers sitting, apparently that is OK too but I need to give him much more encouragement to get him moving.  She seemed a little more understanding of where Rodders is and where he needs to get to. I need to place him much more than I was told to last week to show him where I want him to sit.

After normal heel work and sits we practiced walking around a cone clockwise and anti clockwise, we did a slalom through the other dogs as they were sitting down and everybody was very understanding when Rodders couldn't keep up or decided he wasn't going to walk.  Then we moved on to the agility course, Rodders liked going through the tunnel with the trainer at one end holding him and me at the other calling him, he did that twice and trotted through very happily the second time. He wasn't very sure about the A Frame the first time but cracked it for his second attempt.

Oh, and he was the only dog to poop during lessons :-( Maybe that is why you shouldn't feed them first!

We then went back to the field and did sit, wait and then sit, down, stay. Rodders was easily distracted by what the other dogs are doing and it was hard to keep his attention. He was better at sit, wait.

The other dogs got to try heel off lead while Rodders and I walked around practicing heel.

After this we headed back to the hall and he had to have two goes at sit, wait before we came in the door. We then talked about control and the problems I have had with him this week. The trainer agreed that I am doing the right things with No and ignoring him by either putting him in the kitchen or me. She has also suggested a choke chain and we have come away with a small one. It seemed to work in the hall, lets see how I get on with it, I suppose it is better than pulling him along by the collar. I need to remember to take £3 with me next week to pay for it as I didn't take my handbag with me this week. They are also going to let me know when the Friday puppy class is starting.

We still have a long way to go!

Walk, don't walk

I went to get washed and dressed, Rodders sat at the bottom of the stairs and cried for a while but eventually came up. He tried to steal laundry and got another firm no and stopped in his tracks. He came in to the bathroom and lay on the bathmat while I got dressed but got up for a sniff when I put my socks on. When we came downstairs he lay on snuggle fleece while I sorted my hair out and tied it back.

Rodders seemed to be excited as I got my coat and wellies on and sat for his lead and collar to go on.

He shot out the door, sniffed around the front garden, followed me up the path and sat. And there we stayed until Andrew at No 1 came out to his bin. Rodders barked at him and was happy to walk towards him, barking as he went, but at least he was going!

By the way we have a rocket embedded in the front lawn, I took a photo and will upload it later.

Andrew gave him a fuss and we walked around the corner. A lady came past us and he barked at her. He sat down and watched a lady on the other side of the street and gruffed at her. He then walked a little way and sat down refusing to move. I tried everything to get him to move but he wasn't having it. Finally I tried the training toy and he happily chased that to the corner and then sat. Using the training toy again I got him moving again as far as the next corner and half way down the next bit and then he sat.

Another neighbour was walking home from the shop and Rodders started to walk as she got close and then sat down again. The pair of us tried to get him to move and he wouldn't, I gave up and lifted him around the corner in to Pentland. He was then happy to walk to the door.

We had been out for 20 minutes but most of that was sitting down :-(

Dog Tags

Rodders dog tag has arrived today. He barked when I took his collar off to fit it and wasn't very keen once it was back on and kept trying to catch the dog tag. I diverted him with some play and he seems fine now.

Here he is modelling it :-)

Excuse the state of him, it is a bit wet out today!

Rainy morning

I had to pick Rodders up and take him in the garden for his final piddle of the day, he wasn't impressed but did what he had to do. We came in and I got his treats and put him in his crate, Rodders grizzled a bit when we went upstairs but settled after about 10 minutes.

He heard OH's alarm go off this morning and started to get a bit vocal as he heard him get up and go to the bathroom. OH came down and gave him a fuss as he got him out of his crate and then it was straight outside for a piddle before dashing back in for more fuss and then going out for a poo then in for a play and a snuggle. Each time Rodders came in he had to be towelled off as it is chucking it down with rain, not that it seems to bother Rodders! OH got their breakfasts and Rodders ate a little but there was much more exciting things to be doing.

Rodders was very happy when I came down and came running to great me. Not sure he was so happy about it when I got the flea and worm treatment out but luckily OH got to administer it! Rodders got his collar off for this but it stays on 24/7 now - OH disagrees with this and thinks it should be taken off at night.

Rodders stayed downstairs with me while OH went upstairs to get dressed but he wasn't happy about it and went to the bottom of the stairs and barked. He also had a sniff at my wellies before trying to climb the stairs. I carried him up and he was happy running about while we both got dressed.

Once back downstairs I put on my coat and wellies and got his collar and lead. Rodders seems to know that the lead means that he is getting to go out but I think he was a bit confused as we were A) Going out the back door and B) OH was coming too so he was making little whinging noises. He soon got over it, at least until we got to the back gate and I had to leave him with OH and nip back for my phone, he didn't like that at all.

We said goodbye to OH and went off on our walk. It was very different this morning as it was throwing it down with rain with lots of puddles and different sounds and smells. Rodders seemed quite happy to start with and was skipping along, stopping to look as vehicles came past us, until a van and trailer came past. He wasn't so sure of that and tried to run away, luckily the lead stopped him from getting too far and I managed to calm him down and carry on with our walk. By this stage Rodders was getting quite wet and kept stopping to have a shake, we had only been out 10 minutes when we got back to Pentland and Rodders wasn't too sure about going any further so I let him head towards home. He found lots to sniff at on the green and was quite happy to go beyond the front path so we carried on around the back. He didn't seem to want to go back so we walked beyond the garages on to the grass where he had a poo.

He was then happy to head home and get dried off. I made a cuppa fairly quickly so that Rodders would settle on snuggle fleece. He is always exhausted after his walks.

Just checked his bowl and he has eaten most of his breakfast, just not all at once!

Having fun

Rodders played quite happily both inside and out. He now likes to take his toys outside to the garden but always seems to bring them back.

Eventually he got bored and went to bark at the front door so I got my coat and made him sit while I put his lead on. yes, I know he can't walk outside yet but we can practice to and from the door and he can get used to the extra weight on his collar.

We got stopped at the door by a delivery driver and then we were on our way. We walked up to the Rugby Field (where he will soon be getting lots of walks) down to the main road, along and back through the estate.

We met a little girl with a big Husky. He was interested in Rodders but he paid no attention which earnt Rodders a fuss from her.

He is much more interested in the traffic now and turns his head to watch rather than trying to bury it in my arms.

Back home and in to the garden where he tried to chew his lead, he had walked from the front door with it in his mouth, so I made him sit while I took it off.

We had a run about playing chase which he loves, he barks to ask me to run about again.

I then spotted a half eaten strawberry so grabbed the camera to take a picture as evidence.

He is now playing happily outside and comes running back in for a fuss before chasing off out again.

Three more things

Rodders keeps going to the bottom of the stairs and barking today. Maybe he thinks OH is up there hiding or maybe he wants to get to his Kong!

I dropped a crisp in the floor when I was eating lunch and left it there for Rodders to find when he woke up. He seems to like Walkers Cheese and Onion, but they will be a rare treat!

He has had his collar on nearly all day today, same as yesterday, and he doesn't seem to be too bothered about it. Must remember to get him a dog tag before he is allowed out next week though.

Liver Treats

After we had been upstairs to the bathroom for me to get washed and dressed Rodders went out for a piddle and play in the garden. I called him back in and he came running so I made him sit and gave him one of the liver treats. He loved them so much that he stayed sitting so he got another one. Then he got a bit over excited and was jumping up for one so I just kept asking him to sit and he got another one when he was sitting. After a few I was able to make him wait for the treat, I am so proud of my little boy even if he is desperately sniffing around the conservatory to find another one!

The Clix Noises and Sounds CD has arrived and they recommend playing it at a fairly audible to human ears a few times before increasing the volume. Well so far it has not stopped Rodders from playing at all! We have been once through the "Bangs" and are now going through "Transport"

He has his collar on this morning but is being a bit scratchy with it at the mo. Will just ignore that and see how we do for a while.

The garden has been poop scooped and Rodders waited patiently behind the lounge door while I went to the bin outside. The greeting I got was as though I had been away for hours rather than seconds!

A play and then lunch

Rodders and I poop scooped the garden - for a little dog there is always a lot of it! And then we had a run about playing chase, he didn't seem to want to play fetch with his toy though so we gave that up.

I then went to the outside bin to dispose of the poop, Rodders is getting very good at letting me go on my own as long as he can hear me. He sits very nicely behind the glass door from the lounge while I talk to him and then greets me as though I have been away for hours! Funny dog :-)

I then put the kettle on to make me a cuppa and him his lunch. OH called to check up on us, doesn't he read the blog? Rodders heard me putting the kibble in the bowl and came running, it was a bit warm for him so I distracted him with some play while it rolled down. He sat nicely once it was ready and wolfed down most of it in one go. He has gone off for a play in the sun now but I will call him back to see if he wants to finish it shortly.

The collar is still on, he stops for a scratch every now and again but is generally fine with it. A week today and he can go out in to the big wide world on his lead, a big milestone for a little pup!!!! Must get practicing!

Rodders and the collar

Rodders has been playing happily inside and out until OH rang to say good morning, he then thought that I should be paying attention to him and not OH so started to bite my slippers and dressing gown and needed to be diverted with something else.

He then asked to go out and thought it might be fun to play with the two slugs on the patio - Eeeeeuuugggghhh! So I had to dispose of them fairly quickly. He then went and had a sniff about and another poo. He is very brave now and uses the back patio, near the gate. Luckily he won't go on the border along side Bob and Pat's Garden as that is the only place we have plants poisonous to dogs - it will be fenced off at some point.

I have put his collar on this morning, we have been a bit lax with this. He does keep stopping for a bit of a scratch but is generally OK with it. He has just asked to go out again and so is in the garden with it on. Just sneaked out to look, as he is on the back patio and not visible, so the collar isn't stopping him from sniffing about and having a good time.

Couple of strange things. We had a video call with OH last night and Rodders was moving his head from side to side as OH was talking to him which was quite cute. He has started to ask to go out at the lounge door instead of the conservatory door!

Rodders came in and was up and down to the sofa so I asked if he was a tired boy, at which point he tried to get up on the sofa! Grabbed everything I needed to hand and snuggle fleece and brought him up with me. He had a bit if a scratch at his collar but soon settled down and is now asleep at my feet.

New game

Rodders has decided to stand on the patio and bark before he comes back in. This guarantees that I will be at the door to greet him with a bit of a fuss! Little monkey isn't silly is he :-)

So he is now playing in the conservatory again. So many places to play, so many things to play with! This is one spoilt puppy!

A big yay!!!!

I woke Rodders from his snooze and took him out for a piddle, he wasn't impressed at all! First he lay on the grass as though he was sleeping but with a bit of encouragement he performed as requested.

I then brought him in, put some puppy treats is his bed and locked him in his crate with the blanket pulled over and said I was going shopping and would be back soon. A couple of whimpers as I made my way to the front door but all was quiet as I turned the key in the lock.

I went to Sainbugs and picked up some photo's that I haven't dared look at yet. It is from an old film in my camera and I just know there are some of Mum taken a couple of weeks before she died. Later, when I am feeling brave.....

I got back home to silence. I unlocked the door to silence and came in to the room to silence. I was talking as I lifted the cover and there was a sleepy puppy who had not wrecked his bed or his crate. Well done Rodders!!!!!! So much fuss and tummy rubs I can't tell you. We went in to the garden but he was much too excited to do anything other than run about so after a little while we came back in so that I could make us both some lunch. He was a hungry puppy and has scoffed his, almost at the first sitting. There is a little left for him to go back to.

I have upped what he is getting as he was still sniffing around his bowl when it had all gone yesterday. Even I can see how much he has grown in the last week.

He is happily playing in the conservatory with the kitchen roll inner he carried through from the kitchen. Good job I have been saving them as this one is nearly wrecked and will have to be taken off him shortly.

Some things nobody warns you about a new puppy is the amount of time they take, the worry they cause or the number of times you will have to wash your hands in a day - mine are like sandpaper, they are so dry. Must move some hand cream down to the kitchen!

Other things from the week

Rodders has now met the neighbours and seems to be well accepted.

He doesn't seem to be at all bothered by things like the post or paper's coming through the door or by the doorbell ringing.

Bringing up a puppy seems to be more tiring than a full time, stressful, job but I wouldn't swap Rodders for any amount of money.

I need eye's in the back of my head as he can go from chewing a toy to chewing my furniture in a split second.

He is definitely a Mummy's boy and will come straight back to me if he isn't sure of anyone new.

I have started investigating puppy training, dog walking services, holiday cover etc as I am going to need all of these.

He isn't keen on his collar yet but he did wear it for longer today and I was able to distract him by playing so that he didn't scratch constantly.

I have booked in to a grooming workshop for mid November. I am sure that it will be good socialisation for Rodders with other dogs there and I hope that it will save me money longer term if I can groom him myself - we have a puppy brush and are doing the basics for now!

The vet mentioned that Rodders has one testicle that hasn't yet descended properly & they will keep any eye on it. If it doesn't come down it will be even more important to get him castrated (eeeek) as they can turn cancerous (double eeeeek).

We also talked about micro chipping him, I know I want this done as it will keep him safe should he ever get out. He is a bit small for now though :-(
