Our second adventure

Mid afternoon Rodders and I headed out to the car to drive to Southamptin to spend the night with OH. I put Rodders new bed pad in the car crate and he seemed to love it, not a peep out of him in the car. After the problem we had the other night I also took his old bed too, hopefully we won't need it!

When we got to Southampton I let him have a run around the garden and a piddle before we made our way to reception. Luckily they know us very well at The Concorde Club and it didn't matter that OH wasn't there yet, we were let straight in to our room.

I popped straight out the back door to bring in Rodders old bed and his bag with treats, food, bowls, toys & snuggle fleece in so that I could get him settled fairly quickly. We were in a different room this time, closer to the doors and although Rodders was quite good he did bark whenever someone came through them, I was really worried that this would be a problem overnight.

Rodders had his supper and ate most of it.

I gave Rodders another good run around the garden on his extendable lead which he loves and he pooped so I cleaned that up. He also tried to chase the rabbits! Once we came back in he was happy to settle on snuggle fleece while I sat on the floor beside him with a cuppa. We stayed there until OH rang to say he was five minutes away.

I slipped on Rodders lead and we walked out the back and round to the car park. Rodders sat nicely while we waited and once he heard OH he was off to find him, he was so excited to see him and danced his way back inside.

Tuesday morning

Rodders and I spent Tuesday morning mooching about, me having a shower & drying my hair and packing for our next adventure.

Rodders spent a lot of time in the garden but we also found the time to go for a walk round the neighbourhood and rugby field - we gave the Nicky Line a miss as it seems very muddy at the moment.

For once I found the need to have a cooked breakfast, not sure if it is because the weather has turned colder  or just because I was hungry!

Rodders ate most of his lunch, amazing what an added bit of chicken can do to the taste of kibble!

I also gave Rodders a good comb through and sorted out his gunky eye and dirty bottom. He wasn't very impressed and was trying to bite me a little so he earnt a telling off.

While I packed the car Rodders stayed by the door of the lounge and only barked once. It doesn't matter if I have been away for two minutes or two hours, I still get an amazing greeting from him.

Getting used to being left

I had to leave Rodders at home this morning to go to the job centre, do a little shopping and drop in to the garage.

Again I explained that I had to go out and he needed to stay here. He sat and watched me put on my boots and coat and sort out his treats but there was no way he was walking in to the crate of his own volition. At least he isn't trying to run away and I don't have to chase him.

I picked him up and put him in his bed and he lay down straight away. I gave him his treats, locked the crate and walked away to silence.

I was out for almost two hours and as the front door opened he started to bark and didn't let up even when I spoke to him. I put the shopping down in the kitchen before letting him out, he did at least stop barking. He was very happy to see me and wanted a great big fuss.

Once he calmed down he was happy to go and play in the conservatory and he didn't ask to go out for another 20 minutes, looks like he is going to be like my sisters dog in that respect.

Rodders got left

After running around playing in the garden helping me to poop scoop and playing chase Rodders was starting to settle on snuggle fleece at my feet so I thought it would be a chance to leave him without him getting to upset.

I changed in to my boots and he knew something was up and went and sat on the rolled up carpet. As I put on my coat I was explaining that I had to go shopping and he needed to stay here. He wasn't too happy and started to try and climb up my leg.

I carried on and got his treats and put his bone in his crate, he promptly removed it so I picked them both up and put him in his bed and the bone on the crate floor, I gave him his treats and locked him in the crate.

He was quiet as I walked out the door and there was silence as I walked towards the car. I stayed out for about two hours and I didn't hear anything on my return until I stepped through the door and Rodders started barking. I spoke to him as I made my way towards the crate and the barks changed to whimpers. He had turfed the snuggle fleece out of his bed but everything was OK other than that. As I let him out all he wanted to do was be picked up and have a snuggle, I obviously needed to be licked all over for having the temerity to leave him. I unlocked the patio door and took him in to the garden in case he needed a piddle but he was far too excited and would not leave my side for five minutes and he just kept whimpering.

I left the patio door open and came in to make a cuppa, Rodders at my heels. He eventually left me and went back in to the garden to play with the stones.

Mean Mummy made him wake up

About 4.30 I decided that Rodders needed to wake up and get moving for a little while.

We went out in to the garden first so that he could have a piddle and then upstairs to the bathroom. Once we came down Rodders was happy to have a bit of a play with his toys and we me. I had kept his lead on except for when he went in to the garden and only actually needed to use it the once.

OH rang to say that he had left work and was going to call in on his way past.

About 7pm Rodders crashed again and out himself on snuggle fleece at the sofa. He didn't stir until the back door went when he shot up barking until he saw who it was, then the barks changed to whimpers of delight. Having said hello and being given a snuggle in OH's arms he was happy to go down and went straight back to snuggle fleece. He wasn't even too bothered when I put my coat on to go and empty the car. OH helped himself to a yoghurt and before I got back Rodders had asked for the pot. He had his head right in it when I came in the door but was happy to leave it to come and greet me.

As OH and I were talking he was sat on snuggle fleece with the yoghurt pot just out of reach and it was almost too much effort to reach for it, but he just couldn't resist.

When OH was leaving he said goodbye to Rodders where he was, curled up on snuggle fleece by the sofa, but I knew he wouldn't stay there once the door was opened and sure enough he toddled down to say goodbye at the door.

As soon as OH went he was straight back on snuggle fleece.

He woke at 10pm, gave the yoghurt pot a quick lick and then dashed to the door and asked to go out for a piddle. He has come back in and gone straight back to snuggle fleece. I reckon that gives me another two hours to watch Children in Need. By which time he should be due another piddle just as we need to go to bed. Fingers crossed that should mean that he sleeps beyond 6am!

Grass cutting

Bob next door is out cutting the grass and Rodders could hear him and started barking. Rodders and I went out to poop scoop before he gets to ours.

Rodders is funny, he runs about almost leading me to where each pile of poo is and he doesn't try to eat the bag or the trowel.

We had a quick chat with Bob and Pat over the fence before coming back in. I went to the bin at the front door to dispose of the poo bag and Rodders waited patiently and quietly behind the door and gave me a lovely greeting when I came back in and wanted up for a snuggle.

He is now on snuggle fleece at my feet, just letting him dry off a bit before I go and dry my hair.

Garden antics

Rodders asked to go out in to the garden almost as soon as we got down from the shower and he was out there ages so I went to check he was OK.

I see we now have two stones on the patio and one on the grass.

Rodders was quite happy on the back patio, it looks as though he is now confident enough to spend time down there removing the green stuff from between the slabs - it could take him a while as these are more like bricks than slabs!

When he came in I sat on the floor and he went bonkers asking for a fuss and jumping all over me. I just love the greeting I get from him when I come back from being out, in to  room having left him on his own or when he comes in from the garden.

An evening with OH

As the  the patio door went, Rodders came out the kitchen and went the wrong way! Realising his mistake he quickly turned round and spotted who it was letting themselves in, what a greeting OH got, Rodders was nearly beside himself with glee and couldn't wait to be lifted up so that he could lick OH all over. They stood there for a little while saying hello and then went upstairs to get changed (well obviously OH was getting changed, Rodders wasn't). Rodders was very excited and getting up to mischief so OH had to tell him off a couple of times and have a stern word. He also put Rodders on the bed as he can't get off there, or he couldn't - he can now so it won't be long before he can get on and off the bed.

I popped upstairs just in time for them coming down and made Rodders come down on his own. Again he was very vocal and either barked or whinged at every step but he got all the way to the bottom.

Rodders and OH played in the conservatory while I finished dinner off, they seemed to have been having a good time.

I put dinner on the table and we had to try and keep an eye on Rodders as we ate, something else we are not used to. He did eventually come and settle on snuggle fleece though.

After dinner we cleared up and OH got the hoover out to help me by clearing up the dropped spice jar. This is the second time Rodders has seen the hoover (we have laminate floors downstairs so they get mopped & swiffered usually and the hoover stays upstairs) and he really wasn't sure. As OH started it up Rodders ran off in to the conservatory, I went and brought him back as it is important that he gets used to normal household noises. I stood at the kitchen door with him in my arms and he was fine. Once OH switched it off I put him down and encouraged him over to have a sniff. He seemed OK until it moved, but he didn't bark at it or chase it. It has been banished back upstairs so he may not have to come across it again any time soon.

While I finished off in the kitchen OH was checking what he needs to do to fit an outside light so I can see Rodders in the garden easier. Rodders was running free at this time and he barked so I came to check if he wanted to go in the garden, no thanks!

OH came through and sat at the dining table and spotted Rodders chewing something he shouldn't and dealt with it very swiftly. Rodders came away and went to sit on snuggle fleece.

Once we were all sorted and ready to move through to the lounge I spotted a piddle on the floor :-( This needed to be cleared up before we could settle down for the evening.

It is so frustrating that Rodders is still soiling in the house as he knows how to ask to go out and does it quite often.

What will Rodders do if I leave him?

I needed to pack the car and I didn't have enough hands to manage Rodders as well so I left him in the lounge behind the door and said he had to stay.

He barked two or three times and then silence.

When I came back in he was sitting on his snuggle fleece in front of the sofa. As soon as I walked in the door he was thrilled to see me, was making squeaky puppy noises and wanted up for a snuggle.

Right, second load and Rodders to the car!

Sorting Dinner and the scruff bag out

When I came back downstairs Rodders was very happy to see me and gave me a real greeting before going back to play with OH.

I started to prepare dinner and Rodders was pottering between us. And so neither of us was watching him properly and he piddled on the floor of the lounge :-(

He got thrown in the garden again and barked a bit, but not as bad as last time. Wonder what the neighbours are thinking. We let him back in after 5 minutes, once I had cleared up and treated the area with stain and odour removal.

When he came back in he kept scratching so I got the brushes out to groom him. He managed to nip me while I was doing it and drew blood, this was a first. I had to stop and go and clean myself up so OH carried on. Rodders did look pretty by the time we had finished and so much softer.

By the time we had dinner he was ready to curl up on snuggle fleece and go to sleep. As we have moved around from the dining table to the sofa's he has followed us and he came upstairs with me when I went to the bathroom but stayed down here with me when OH went.

A long morning

Rodders eventually fell asleep on me, would get up for a very short play and then fall asleep again. And this is how our day went on until about 1pm when I decided enough was enough.

I put my shoes on which got him a little interested and then I put a coat on and he was beside me. We went out and poop scooped the garden and then I went to the front door leaving him behind the lounge door.  He did bark once but was quiet after that. And the greeting he gave me when I came back in was as though I had been gone for hours.

So happy!

Well I let Rodders in the garden before I went to Tesco and then put him in his crate with his puppy treats and covered the crate. He cried as I made my way to the door and he cried as I walked away :-(

I did the shopping, feeling stressed out, and wondered what I would find when I got home.

I walked in to silence, I put the shopping down in the kitchen and then spoke to him as I lifted the cover. And there he was, sat in his bed, and everything else was as I had left it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, the puppy treats had gone obviously :-)

So happy with my little boy!!!!!!!!! He got so much fuss and we went to have a run around the garden to celebrate :-)

He was happy to see me too!

OH drops in

OH dropped in on his way home this evening. Rodders was fast asleep and raised his head as he came in the back door and lay there for a minute or two thinking about it. Then he got up and came towards him with his tail wagging, he knew who it was and was very pleased to see him. He wanted up for a snuggle and to give OH a quick wash!

We all then ended up in the garden so that Rodders could have a piddle and then back in the warm for a cuppa and some Choccies :-)

Rodders wanted up with OH straight away and sat nicely being fussed, no biting or chewing him -  well maybe a sneaky one but he got a short sharp no and stopped straight away.

Just before OH left he nipped up to use the bathroom and Rodders wanted to come back up with me. Of course he started to bite me straight away and wasn't taking my NO at all. OH came back down and said it and he stopped straight away. It looks as though I need to change my tone of voice!

We saw OH off out the back door and Rodders curled up on his towel at the back door - not sure if he wanted to wait for him to come back but it will be a long wait as he isn't here again until Monday! He did come through to join me and has curled up at my feet on snuggle fleece.

Liver Treats

After we had been upstairs to the bathroom for me to get washed and dressed Rodders went out for a piddle and play in the garden. I called him back in and he came running so I made him sit and gave him one of the liver treats. He loved them so much that he stayed sitting so he got another one. Then he got a bit over excited and was jumping up for one so I just kept asking him to sit and he got another one when he was sitting. After a few I was able to make him wait for the treat, I am so proud of my little boy even if he is desperately sniffing around the conservatory to find another one!

The Clix Noises and Sounds CD has arrived and they recommend playing it at a fairly audible to human ears a few times before increasing the volume. Well so far it has not stopped Rodders from playing at all! We have been once through the "Bangs" and are now going through "Transport"

He has his collar on this morning but is being a bit scratchy with it at the mo. Will just ignore that and see how we do for a while.

The garden has been poop scooped and Rodders waited patiently behind the lounge door while I went to the bin outside. The greeting I got was as though I had been away for hours rather than seconds!

A play and then lunch

Rodders and I poop scooped the garden - for a little dog there is always a lot of it! And then we had a run about playing chase, he didn't seem to want to play fetch with his toy though so we gave that up.

I then went to the outside bin to dispose of the poop, Rodders is getting very good at letting me go on my own as long as he can hear me. He sits very nicely behind the glass door from the lounge while I talk to him and then greets me as though I have been away for hours! Funny dog :-)

I then put the kettle on to make me a cuppa and him his lunch. OH called to check up on us, doesn't he read the blog? Rodders heard me putting the kibble in the bowl and came running, it was a bit warm for him so I distracted him with some play while it rolled down. He sat nicely once it was ready and wolfed down most of it in one go. He has gone off for a play in the sun now but I will call him back to see if he wants to finish it shortly.

The collar is still on, he stops for a scratch every now and again but is generally fine with it. A week today and he can go out in to the big wide world on his lead, a big milestone for a little pup!!!! Must get practicing!

Bath anyone?

At midday I went up and got changed and came down and put Rodders in the garden, he wasn't interested in having a piddle and wanted to play. So we did for a minute or two. Then I brought him in and explained that I had to go out but I wouldn't be very long, got him a puppy treat and a toy and placed him in his bed, shut the crate and pulled the cover over. He was crying and whining by the time I got to the door and still carrying on as I walked away :-(

I met with the lady at the Job Centre who realised that I am more than capable of finding work for myself but gave me a few pointers - obviously something they feel they have to do. She also looked to see if there was anything suitable on their site, only one in Milton Keynes paying a lot less than I need. We talked about a drop in salary and she accepted that I am already prepared to take a LARGE drop, but there are limits. We also talked about needing to be up to an hour away by public transport, the jobs I have applied for so far in Hatfield and Borehamwood cover that. So I seem to have done enough to keep them happy for this week.

I then did a little shopping, including buying Rodders a new toy, and went to meet with the chap from MRK Associates in Starbucks. He seemed confident that there would be a job out there for me in Hemel, at the right salary, and already has a couple of things in mind. One is a maternity cover 10 minutes from home! The downside is they are looking for someone quickly.

I was 10 minutes over my 2 hour parking by the time I got back to the car but luckily the car park warden had not caught me and I didn't have a penalty charge, phew :-) This meant that I had been away from home for almost two and a half hours. What was going to greet me when I got back?

I walked in the door to silence and Rodders didn't make a sound until I spoke (he couldn't see it was me as the crate was covered) and then he went nuts, whimpering and scratching the crate to get out. I put the shopping down and lifted the cover, he was almost squeaking with delight at having me home. But he was soaking, the crate was wrecked, how much damage can you do with less than an inch of water? Well the pictures show that there is a fair amount! I have shown what it should look like and what it did look like :-( This time the bed pad was still in place and the snuggle fleece was half in and half out his bed so that is a small improvement.

Rodders was under my feet as we made our way to the garden, squeaking and barking, he didn't want to leave my side and he certainly didn't want a piddle. We had a run about and played chase and I threw his squeaky toy for him and gradually he calmed down, but he wanted a lot of fuss and attention. We came in and went upstairs so I could change and then back down to out the kettle on for a cuppa and his lunch before another trip to the garden.

Once Rodders was happy to play on his own I came in to survey the damage. The snuggle fleece was wet, the bed pad was wet, his toy was wet, the puppy pad was drenched, I can't tell if he has had a piddle or if it is water out of the now empty bowl! He came in when he heard me ripping kitchen roll to mop up and inspected what I was doing. I have put the new puppy pad down using the sticky pads and will see if that makes it harder for him to pull up next time I leave him. The snuggle fleece and bed pad are now in the washing machine, luckily we have spares!

He has eaten half of his lunch and has been happy playing in the garden so he must have slept for most of the time I was out, that has to be a positive, right?

A short interlude or two

I moved from the Dining Table to the sofa and Rodders followed me to settle on his snuggle fleece on the floor. After a while I needed to go to the bathroom so told Rodders where I was going. He came and sat at the bottom of the stairs with one paw on the bottom step and waited with a bit of a whimper. I talked to him and told him I wouldn't be long but the whimpering continued.

He was very happy when I came back down and greeted me as though I had been away for hours. We went straight in the garden for a piddle (Rodders, not me!) and then he came back in for a fuss and a puppy treat before settling down again at my feet.

Poor OH has had a bad journey to work today but is almost there. Don't you hate Mondays on the M25? Very happy I no longer have to do that journey!

I have been investigating pet insurance and it seems to be a bit of a minefield. Looks like I will go with either PetPlan or The Kennel Club, just need to compare the benefits of the two policies.

What a greeting!

I had to ring the bell as I forgot to take my key, that didn't work so I tried the door knocker, failed again. So I phoned Ailie. Oh! was that the doorbell, we were trying to work out the noise and checked the computer!

Pete let me in and Rodders was nearly beside himself with glee. He wanted a fuss, he wanted to come up, he was just so excited to see me. This is one of the reasons I wanted a dog, the unconditional love that they give you regardless of how long you have been away. This is the first time that Rodders had done this and it brought a lump to my throat.
