OK, so I am booked in to the Grooming Workshop for 13/11/11 and I need to decide how I want to groom Rodders before I go. Right now it is a bit of a battle as he likes to chew his puppy brush but I need to try harder and maybe do a leg a night, that is the recommendation from the Schnauzer Forum.
Stripping involves a sort of knife thing and it pulls the dead hair out from underneath. It is something that should be done fairly regularly as Schnauzers do not shed hair - makes them good choice for asthmatics. I have been shown how to do hand stripping, but wonder how good I will be at it. Need to read up on it and maybe check you tube. This will give him a wiry coat.
Or he could be trimmed with electric trimmers, sort of like a beard trimmer for dogs used mainly on the body. This seems to give them a softer coat.
And then there are scissors for around his face and legs (and may be other bits) - do they do the safety ones with rounded ends like we used to get at school? Not sure I want to go near my puppy with a pointy pair!
Do I do it myself or let a trained groomer do it? Or do I do it myself most of the time but let a groomer do it properly every now and again? If I could do it myself it would save a lot of money each year.
Which ever way I choose to go he will still need to be brushed regularly to make it easier for whoever does the main grooming and to make sure he doesn't get knotted or matted, especially if he has got very wet or muddy. He needs to be used to being handled and faffed about with (this is obviously a technical term!).
Decisions, decisions!
